Test Drive:
2009 Toyota Corolla S

2009 Toyota Corolla SThe all-new 2009 Corolla S looks sportier than the CE and LE models, but it has the same 1.8-litre engine, reports Contributing Editor, Chris Chase.  Improvements for '09 include more stable handling, improved manual shifter and a quieter cabin, he says.

Just gonna throw this out there:

Would it be possible - when a vehicle is being tested, to arrange to have TWO writers attend for a point-counterpoint on the vehicle at hand?  Or spread out the inteviews over the years?

I can appreciate that the writers are in different geographical locales, and there are differences in trim grades (some mostly asthetic, others more dramatic), but when I see that there have been ALREADY BEEN THREE driving reviews and a DAY TO DAY feature on the '09 Corolla by four different people - that's a lot of attention on a single car Model Year.

Are there too many contributors and not enough brands that there is this amount of overlap on a COROLLA?  Or are there enough Greg Wilson groupies that have a tough time believing a Jil McIntosh review to warrant two reviews months apart   Grin?

When can I expect a Test Drive of a base Corolla 5 speed?

S P R E A D     O U T     T H E     R E V I E W S

Or, tie them together in a concise fashion....

It's a COROLLA, people!   FIVE REVIEWS.   OY!

Yeah a lot of reviews on the corolla but people do wants reviews of different trim levels. Although in this case even that's a big question since the "S" trim for the corolla isn't anything special.

Actually, that would make it a 2009 Toyota Corolla IAS edition (Isn't Anything Special).

Quick - we need an article on this new limited edition model!!!!!!   Wink

Often, writers are at the mercy of what the manufacturers give them.

Hey..this is one of the best selling cars in Canada, the USA and the World.  Not only that, it's one of the most reliable ever.  And it's made here in Ontario.  I'm not too upset if there's a couple extra reviews, and to be honest, I've only read 2 of them.  It's just like TV folks...if you don't like what you see...don't read it.  I almost never read the reviews for trucks or SUVs since they don't interest me.  I only read what interests me here...

The Corolla is all new for model year 2009, so one would expect a ton of buzz.  It is also a volume selling model, so many people are interested in reviews as they are seeking buying information.  Combine this with Toyota making them available, and presto, many reviews.

This little car may be reliable, but it's butt ugly.  So they changed the fenders, hood, grille, rear trunk lid, but left everything else the same, including the doors, bodysides.....  Still looks like the same car as before....But, it's a car I'd recommend to my mom.

I would probably never consider this car for myself. But...I recommend it to people all the time, because of its comfort, economy and reliability.

I was following one of these the other day and noticed something really tacky about this car.  The skirting on the rear bumper is constructed with two pieces with a seam in the middle.  We would be all over the domestics if they did that.  Would it have killed them to make it out out one piece.  Even with the low res picture you can see it

Good point, also I remember comments on how horrendous the reflectors in the bumper looked on the X-Trail, well they don't look much better here...

Not a car I'd ever buy but imho it looks like a nice package for the price and I'd certainly suggest to friends that it should be a car they would consider buying... buying as I am sure it will do 15 years at least like the previous Corollas did.

Not even ugly....just looks like a early 21st century small car.

Most people won't notice it. Should rename this model the Plumer Special.

Everyone will look at it differently for sure but there is no denying that the actual structure is quite different if evolutionary.  Its definitely not the same car inside or outside...have a good look at one up close.  Actually have a good look at two up close...a new one and an old one.
