Steering vibration
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:49:52 pm »
2007 Toyota Camry 4-cylinder with about 65000km on it.

After the last service 4000km ago and tire rotation (front tires swapped with rear tires)

The steering wheel vibrates at speeds above 110km/h.

Smooth as butter upto 100km/h. I've checked the tires, tire pressures.

Does this sound like an alignment issue? or something else needs to be checked.

The balancing wasn't done on one of those fancy Hunter Road Force balancing machines when the tires were installed last year.

Imagine there is a lot of possibilities:

Wheel weight knocked off on the change, tire switched sides and now running backwards, slight bent rim/balance issue that only shows up on the steering axle, junk fell between the rim and the wheel when mounting, wheel loose and ready to fall off :) etc.

Of course it might just be a coincidence, and you just happened to get a bubble/delamination in a tire at the same time as the rotation.

There's a few things you could check by eye, but it would be cheap and quick to get them rebalanced and checked over. I've never had vibration from an alignment issue.

Wheels can loose their balance over time.  Weights get lost, belts shift, uneven wear, etc.  You could try swapping out the each of the front wheel with the spare and see if the vibration goes away.  If it does, then we have a suspect wheel.

Also it could be your Toyota telling you not to break the law by going over the 100 km/h speed limit.  :D

tire switched sides and now running backwards

IMO, rotating tires so that they run in the reverse of what they did before is only asking for trouble.

Try front to back only on the same side.  PPL who run directional tires are use to this method.

Like PJ also mentioned: it's not alignment so don't get suckered into that expense because it will be mentioned.

The car has Nokian WR G2 tires, directional tread pattern and were rotated front to back with specific instructions and I checked again today. There are markers like this on sidewall (F--R).

Well in that case first step is to re-balance the front tires.  If that doesn't work then it's time to trade.  :D

Has to be a balancing issue IMO.  Tires installed in reverse would more likely cause rumbling noises with the pitch changing with speed, much like a snow tire.

Its very easy to loose a wheel weight and that will do exactly what the type of problem you are having does. I would invest in a high-speed balance which should fix this problem.  :)

So, it looks like an alignment issue then. Time to find those Hunter road force machines then.

Thanks for the responses.

Must be a Toyota issue.  I have the same problem with my Sienna about once a month.  I just don't understand it.  I have learned to live with it.   >:(

Maybe it has pms  ???

Dump the car.  Sounds terminal.  I'll bite the bullet and give you the much-too-high sum of $2500.

Didn't everyone suggest its a balancing issue?

Pretty much most did, including wrong direction of tires.

I'll find out during the week whether balancing works.

Thats a possibility, since you are an air expert by profession. Should I hook it up the pump to my A/C system and fill up the tires?  ;D
