Chang Jiang with CJ 750 Sidecar
« on: July 29, 2008, 09:53:30 am »
A pile of these Chang Jiang CJ 750 motor bikes with sidecars showed up at the local show. Must have been some owners getting together because I've never seen one before never mind six in southern Alberta of all places. Anyway I'm not really a big bike guy but I really liked these. Its a Chinese replica of a BMW R71 classic motor cycle. Tooling was sold to the Russians who later traded it to the Chinese for a bunch of apples and eggs (seriously). Great looking bike - one of the owners was saying it was a bear to keep on the road though - always needing adjustments and tuning. But it was designed in the 30s I believe.

My uncle worked in the USSR in the late '50s and came back with a K750 motorcycle. Unfortuantely, garage and motorcycle burned down soon after.
I don't think the tooling was sold the the Russians, rather they just took it as compensation after WWII.

The Russians built these under the "URAL" nametag, and can still be bought brand spanking new.  AND can be driven in the winter with the optional 2WD sidecar set-up.  Very cool indeed.

The Russians took the tooling for the overhead valve R75 BMW in '45. That's why they sold the tooling for the flathead R71's (they got prewar from the Reich) to the Chinese in the 50's.

Real living fossils.

Are the Chinese building these now? Why?!

There is an old British design still manufactured in India. However, these motorcycles are now rare and aren't purchased for any practical reason:

I didn't know they were on sale in USA! Can you direct me to a retailer?

I'm aware they're still being built. Aren't the numbers really small, though, compared to mainstream motorcycles?

A friend of my uncle had a Jawa (think is from late Yugoslavia or something) with a sidecar back in Cuba, it was amazing to ride in the sidecar.

Reminds me of the old Harleys and Indian Bikes of that era. Very nice looking designs but heavy looking. Should ride fairly well but not fast I would think. Nice intown cruiser.  :)

He's right, and its even more fun without the sidecar  :o
IIRC they (URALs) have a shaft drive and a reverse which back in the day set them apart from everything else.

I think me means that the Chinese ones are hard to keep running, not that they are fun.
Personally I can't imagine wanting a copy of a copy of a bike designed 80 years ago and made with materials probably inferior to the original.
