Get seat time. After about an hour test drive in the Civic, my arse and back were killing me. There is something in the Civic seats that just don't fit me. I just can't get comfortable. A bit of a shame, as there is lots to like about the Civic. The Corolla (I have an 09 CE-C) was better, and after numerous highway trips, I find the seats pretty decent. Not as good as the German cars I've owned, but they did cost 2-4x as much, so they should be better!
As for seating position, the telescoping steering wheel in the Corolla was a great help for me. I am 6' tall, but barely have a 30" inseam, so I am all torso.
Some nits I have now that I have 4 months of time with the Rolla...
1. The padding on the center armrest is, well, not there. Some would be nice!
2. The rear cupholder is flimsy and not up to taller drinks. The front is fine.
3. The door detents are such that the first detent is too close to get in or out, the next is full open, and the doors really open wide. Constant worry that my daughter will bash the car door.
4. The car cannot be had (CE trim) with a darker interior. Those with kids know of what I speak.
5. The trip computer uses the clock display, so if you are using the computer, you have to scroll through the functions to get the clock display. Bummer. Many 09 owners dislike this, but I figure the car was $20K out the door, so...
6. No trunk release on the trunk lid. Even if the car is unlocked, I have to either use the release beside the seat or the key.
7. Frikin' mini-spare. This is the first one we've had in a long time, and I hate them. When I buy the winter steel wheels, I'm ordering five and ditching the mini-spare. Stupid.
8. Don't let anything happen to the windscreen. It's a special type of glass and the part is about $800 plus install. No jobber glass yet. Ours is perfect, but I know someone that had theirs cracked. Youch!
9. Steering response is odd thanks to the electric power steering, but I am used to it now and don't notice it at all.
Some things I have grown to like...
1. The TPMS works well. Have had two tires with screws, and the TPMS let us know before any loss of inflation pressure was visible. Able to make repairs long before tire damage, etc. Nice.
2. The Fuel economy is outstanding. Wow. The engine management system has obviously been tuned to economy operation, and it is paying off.
3. Service costs are low. The dealer has fixed service pricing, so there are no surprises. A "major" service is still <$200. Some Honda owners I know are envious, relating high service costs. Our other car is a Subaru, and Scoob dealers are notoriously expensive, so this is a nice change.
4. The 195/65-15 tire size is very common are there are lots of tires in this size. Will make buying snow tires easy, and replacing the mushy all-season with an h-rated tire is simple without breaking the bank or changing wheels.
5. At first, I thought the gas tank too small. 42L main capacity (when the fuel light goes on, it takes 42L to fill)? But, after some trips, I am going well over 700km before the light comes on, so that is okay. know a bigger tank would hurt city economy, but being able to go over 1000km is nice. (our MB diesel could go 1200km on a tank, loved that)
6. Insurance costs are so low it's amazing. 60% of what we were paying on an 11 year old MB or the 8 year old Subaru. Better coverage and lower premiums? Gotta love that! $609 a year for $250dd all perils with a staggering 48 month depreciation waiver? That's pricing from the 1980's!
