First Drive:
2009 Hyundai Genesis

2009 Hyundai GenesisLike that old advertisement for piano lessons, "They laughed when I sat down to play the piano", the idea of the all-new Hyundai Genesis competing with the likes of the BMW 5-Series might seem funny at first - but don't laugh too soon, says Editor-in-chief, Greg Wilson.

Still, the influential Black Book of used car residual values is predicting the 2009 Genesis V6 will retain 52% of its value after three years and the Genesis V8 will retain 50% of its value after the same period.

That's the real shocker.

The people who will say "a Genesis offers 90% of the driving experience of a GS or E-Class for 60% the price" are the same sort of people who say "a three-year-old car offers 90% of the driving experience of a new car for 60% of the price."  Whereas people who jump for loaded Mercs and Jaguars are often the same sort of people who place a premium on "new-car smell."  So it actually makes complete sense to me that the Genesis would retain its value better than other cars in the segment.

THIS car would not look out of place parked out front of the Royal York along with the high end Euro-nese brands.

Wonder what the cash price will be

Assume Kia won't be getting a version of this....

It seems a little strange to me. I would have thought Hyundai would have done better to make this car one of the first models of a new luxury brand a la Lexus or Acura. Not to be snobbish but after spending 40 or 50K I'd want a little better showroom and service dept ambiance than the average Hyundai dealer offers.

Very nice car, the only thing I can see hurting it is not opting for the Genesis namebrand instead.  For this money I want a logo on the grill with a big fancy G, I find the anonymous thing odd.

Wow, count me as extremely impressed. Very solid looking vehicle with lots of luxury, content, space, performance, and build quality, at a reasonable price. I would seriously consider buying this over any competitor if I were in the market for such a car, and probably would.

Despise that grille. I dislike most front ends without a badge because they look unfinished and aftermarket IMO. The author makes a good point for why to keep it off, but comes across to me as thought Hyundai is embarrassed and feels their brand isn't up to snuff. It is what it is.

Squeezes the Azera into non-existence - either go Sonata or Genesis. Would assume Hyundai would like to move Genesis upmarket eventually.

As you all may recall Acura did the same thing when they came out initially.  Their cars were totally debadged on the front, then the Integra gained a moulded Acura lettering in the front bumpers as did the Legend, I should know cause I owned one.

Hugely impressive car, the FUEL ECONOMY is INCREDIBLE!!!  Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Acura should be totally embarassed.  In other words, I checked and found that the Genesis v8 gets better fuel economy than an Acura TL v6, RL v6, Lexus IS, GS, and any mercedes and BMW you can name.  VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE, and on regular too.  In fact the Genesis v6 gets better fuel economy on the hwy than the CSX type -s, with that high revving, low torque 2.0L WOW!!!

On the subject of "new car smell". I read somewhere (and this makes sense, at least to me) that the smell many seem to be fond of is actually the chemical smell of those "plastics"(soft as they are they're still petroleum based plastic) that eventually goes away over a period of time. Obviously old(er) cars do not have that smell as the vapor has pretty much been completely released to the outside of the car.

Of course I can't vouch for the validity of the reason behind the "smell", but at least for me these days, when I sit in new cars I try not to breathe that stuff in as much as I can.

I see the badge as one of the biggest issues with this car. I could be wrong, but having the same badge as the Accent, it will badly hurt its image.
Looking at the Veracruz, which was built with a similar idea in mind, I don’t see them stealing any sales from the Lexus RX; maybe from Mazda, Toyota, Honda, GM maybe, but not Lexus.

Although it "borrows" design cues from virtually all luxury brands -BMW, Lexus, MB, Infinity, it's a nice car overall, but it definitely lacks personality. IMO, while putting out good cars, Hyundai is yet to find their own identity; actually, they kind of had it with the past generation SantaFe, Tiburon, etc., but nothing to be proud of IMO.

Hyundai faces a problem with branding.

1. Release the Genesis and Veracruz under the Hyundai brand and people will mock you. Attempt to move the brand upmarket and Kia to solidify the mainstream.

or

2. Release the Genesis and Veracruz under their own, upscale brand. But then you are stuck with three brands, and if Hyundai is to remain the mainstream brand then where does that leave Kia? As Chevy to Hyundai's Pontiac? Yuck.

It appears they've gone with option 1.

Hyundai is still coming on strong, despite the shrinking market in the US.  They make the right plays and keep their product line trim.  No Tundra-trucks, Tahoe-SUVs, etc.

This car is a gamble at a time when the US economy is tanking and gas prices are through the roof.  But, if they get their foot in the market and then things turn around, they will be well positioned.

But, they need to understand one of the things that people pay $50K for: dealer service.  Selling a $50K car next to a $9995 car can be difficult, especially if the $50K buyer percieves that he/she is getting the $9995 service level.

However, the Acura/Lexus style investment is too large for one model.  They would need a range of upscale models in order to support a separate dealer network.

If I were an Exec at Honda/Toyota/Nissan I would be watching these Koreans like a hawk...

One of the things that had prevented me from seriously considering a Hyundai or Kia locally was the dealer netowrk here. They have recently upgraded that on the Kia side of the house but the local Hyundai dealers are still worrisome for me. But having said that, I would seriously shop any of their cars now and that is not something I would have said a few years ago. I think it is far more likely I would buy something from them than from Toyonda.

Which I think is why Toyota adjusted down the price of so many models.

Hyundai goes big on Genesis lease

Kathy Jackson
Automotive News
July 14, 2008 - 12:01 am ET

LOS ANGELES — Hyundai is doing its biggest lease deal ever in a bid to attract customers to the $33,000 Genesis sedan.

Buyers can lease the V-6 model, which went on sale in June, for $399 per month for 24 months with $2,199 due at lease signing. Hyundai expects the V-6 to account for about 80 percent of the sales for the new luxury car.

"We're excited," says Bill Wallace, owner of Wallace Hyundai in Stuart, Fla. "It's the right message with the right car."

The deal is the first aggressive lease program offered by Hyundai Motor Finance Co., says John Krafcik, vice president of product planning at Hyundai Motor America. The Genesis is the first Hyundai aimed at upscale buyers, who tend to lease rather than buy.

Krafcik says he expects leasing to represent about half of Genesis sales. He says Hyundai's lease penetration has been 10 to 12 percent.

A strong residual value from Automotive Lease Guide helped cut the cost of leasing.

The Santa Barbara, Calif., company, which sets residual standards for the industry, estimates that a 2009 Genesis will be worth 50 percent of its original sticker price after 36 months.

"That is definitely a big win for Hyundai," says Jim Clark, editorial director at Automotive Lease Guide.

Wallace, who also sells Cadillacs and Lincolns, says the Genesis lease deal is $100 to $150 less per month than Cadillac now offers on the CTS, which Hyundai says is a prime competitor.

Adds Don Hicks, a Hyundai dealer in Aurora, Colo.: "If $399 gets them in the door and they don't buy that car, something's wrong."

The V-6 lease deal runs through July. The V-8 version goes on sale in about a month.

 :iagree:

16-17K for one of these at 3 years old with 50-60.000Kms would be a strong reason to take a drive to the States.
