My Impressions of Driving the Ford Edge
« on: July 10, 2008, 09:25:09 am »
My inlaws bought a new Ford Edge Limited 4wd last fall.  They came over last weekend and I drove it on a round trip to Niagara and back of about 300kms.

Here are my observations:

. Nice interior, very good front seats, lots of interior room, nice textures, although some of the plastics are hard
. Very good exterior finish and paint
. Engine seems very smooth and quiet, six speed transmission is very good
. visibility to the rear is poor through the rear view mirror
. acceleration is moderate.  I think the engine works hard to move the weight of this car, although the tranny and engine work very well together
. interior is very quiet at speed, although there is a bit of harshness from the tires
. fuel economy is so - so as I recorded 10.9L/100 on 80% highway at my normal 125kph speed.

I drove a Mazda CX7 last fall and found it much more engaging to drive.  For comparison purposes, my Infiniti M35 gets about 9.3L/100 on the same 80% highway conditions at 125kph.  The increased drag of the Edge is probably the cause.

When I rented one recently I found that there was very little space behind the second row. I had to turn the stroller sideways to allow me to close the hatch, which took up a large portion of the hatch area. With the 6, the stroller fits in lengthwise and I can push it to the side allowing more space to load luggage and other property than in the Edge!

Other than that I also enjoyed my time driving one. We did lots of city and some highway over the 3 days we had it and were very comfortable.
Everyone hates us until they need us.

My in laws own an Edge Limited 4WD and I reset the fuel economy memory about a month ago.  I had the car the other night and it is averaging 14.6L/100 in 90% city, 10% highway driving.

Ive hired one of these... wasn't impressed at all.  The most annoying thing is that the sun seemed to continually reflect off the dashboard onto to the inside of the windscreen and make visibility extremely poor.

Power steering is over sensitive, lack of road feel from the wheel, and a cheaply finished interior.

I wouldn't rent one again, let alone buy one.

I just borrowed my parents Edge, it was easier than transferring the car seat, and I rather enjoyed it.

The Sync system is going to take more than the 10 minutes I had to play with it while I was in line at Tim's. Sunroof is absolutely humongous! I opened the sunshade and it took forever. I look up and BAM! An avalanche of sunlight.

Took me a while to figure the heated seats. Some form of paddle shifting wouldn't seem to be out of place considering the price.

Seats are nice, tons of second row room. Moreso than our SV6 Montana.

8 way power seats and tilt/telescoping steering wheel sure makes getting a comfy position very easy. Oh and memory seats mean I'm not afraid to actually move the seat since it was being borrowed!

I have to say I'm not a fan of Ford drivetrains. I didn't find the tranny provided very smooth shifting and the engine sure could use more motivation.

All in all, very nice but I'd like to try the CX-7 or even the CX-9 since I don't want a turbo 4 unless it's in an STI or Legacy GT.

I parked next to a Ford Edge 'sport' the other day at the grocery store. A new option for the edge with ground effects and very nice in black with 22" rims! :o

the new cx7 now offers a non turbo 2.5, told it will be out late summer, if you can believe a sales person. Was told the new M3 was coming April but was here last month.
the front has been redesigned and looks like the new 2010 Mazda 3
I also want a non turbo but if the front looks the 2010 M3 I might have to pass on it.
