Test Drive:
2008 Subaru WRX STi

2008 Subaru WRX STiOn a drive up to cottage country in "terrible conditions", Toronto reviewer Laurance Yap found the 305-hp AWD STi a "delight" to drive on twisty gravel back roads. It's the car's engineering that makes it worth $45,000, he concludes.

I saw a couple of the new STi on the road, its looks is no longer have the old Bad Boy Attitude, a lot more tamed and 'feminine' somehow.

The old Impreza/WRX/STI was quirky looking but people got used to it and they loved the originality.
The 08s definitely look different, you can see Toyota's influence on the design but again some people like it and some don't.
I think the new lines look really good especially on the STI.

Sure, we are not really biased in any way, are we?

Haven't driven any STi yet, wish there would be an opportunity to be behind the wheel.

Meh.  Every test drive I've seen or watched where they really caned it complained about understeer and a lack of body control.  Specifically: Fifth Gear (solo drive by Tiff Needell), Top Gear (comparison with EVO X), Car & Driver (last place in comparison w/ EVO and R32), Edmunds (last place in the "GT-R versus the world" test).  The last STI was exactly what a rally car for the masses should have been.  But I think Scoobie missed the point with this generation.

I happened to park beside one yesterday.  At first I did not recognize it but when I did I must admit I thought it was much nicer looking that the last model.

I think the new STi looks fantastic.  Seems to me it's lost its boy-racer over-the-topness, but it still looks totally badass.  And worse driving dynamics or not, it was faster around the Top Gear track than the EVO! (er, by two hundredths of a second...  heh)  And from what I've heard, the STi feels far more planted and solid than the EVO, and that imo makes you more confident behind the wheel and thus makes the car easier to drive.  Smiley

I love the new model but the huge price difference from CDN and US is a big big turn off.

Import it from the states. I've been lurking in quite a number of Subaru forums and have read a few posts of people who've imported them. Essentially, when importing you can be on the road in Canada all said and done for 40K. That's tax, riv fees, duty, everything. Still over 5K cheaper than the before tax MSRP in Canada.

Base MSRP in US is 34K and most are able to shave a grand or two off the price in negotiations.

CRAZY deal!

Is that for the Sti?

Also, can US dealers (not just Subaru) arrange finance or do you have to arrange that yourself?

Yes its cash only.
It maybe hard to pull together 40K in cash unless you own a home. When I imported my WRX I had only 6k saved up and the rest came from my secured line of credit. I ended up putting about 25K on the LOC (currently at prime or 4.75%).
The good news is I only have 15.5K left to pay, the bad news is ... there isn't any bad news, accept maybe the price of gas.

The whole article is about driving the STI to cottage country yet he takes photos of the car around some dump at College and Front.   Roll Eyes

And the car has not been washed...... or nothing. Very poor effort and not worthy of the electrons it is printed on.

So he should have instead stopped the car during his drive, and taken photos in the pitch black and in the middle of a rainstorm?  Then we'd have you complaining that the photos were too dark...

It's a Subaru -- it looks better when the skin is hidden under mud and filth.   Grin

Gee sorry, I must have missed the part where he drove back to TO the same rain-filled evening and the sleeping bag was for ballast. Bang
