First Drive:
2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR

2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MRExclusive to the EVO MR for 2008 is a six-speed Twin Clutch Sportronic Shift Transmission, an automated manual transmission similar to Volkswagen's Direct Shift Gearbox.  "It's just plain awesome," says CarTalkCanada editor, James Bergeron.

I'm really interested to try a twin-clutch automated manual sometime.  Imagining what it would be like, it just seems like it wouldn't be as involving.  But the reviews I've read from people who have driven cars with these gearboxes, from the GTI to the EVO to the GT-R, are absolutely glowing.  Maybe I just fear change?

^^^^Yea..I think so.  Grin The Editor of "0-60" Magazine said he'd NEVER, EVER want a car with such a gearbox.  Then he tried the GT-R.  He even wrote an editorial with a sort-of apology saying he liked the GT-R box and would own one....

Although a bigger complaint I heard about the Mits and the GT-R was that because the car was so easy to drive fast, that it was maybe not as fun to drive...a little more antiseptic...

Such complaints are proof of how spoiled we are nowadays.  I'll bet you that a performance driver in the 1950s would have looked at you cross-eyed if you complained that a car was TOO easy to drive fast on a twisty road.

I suspect a performance car driver from the 50's would just not believe the EVO... or any other modern AWD car with lost of performance like the R8 for example, Carrera 4 and so on. Even with all the electronics turned off the tire grip would be unbelievable.

I like clutchless manual transmissions, they are pretty fun to drive even if you aren't shifting yourself. Only bad thing from what I have read is that this gear box can't handle to much more power from stock.

Mitlov and I had a spirited exchange about manumatics and lazy drivers...so no need to rehash that here.

Quote from JB --- "The Lancer Evolution MR was easier to drive than a video game - it is that good"

Just a preference...I like my cars to be either (a) be inexpensive and do a heck of a job at carrying the mail or (b) be involving to drive.

The GSR might be the best combo out there...we'll find out this week as I got a call today that the GSRs were now available for test drives.

First off, link to your discussion with Mitlov please?

Secondly, is that AutoPark in Burl that's got Evos for testing?

AFAIK there are no EVO owners on the board yet.  There are/were some Subaru STi owners, though, who might be able to give some idea of what everyday life with a rally car is like...

I briefly saw a white MR Premium on Monday at the Mitsu dealership while waiting for my car to get an oil change. It was sharp to say the least.  Drool
It was on its way for detailing before delivery to its fortunate owner. I was talking to a salesman and he said they have very limited availability and they sell them on pre-orders. Not a single one (GSR or MR) in stock this time. They used to have a GSR in the showroom but not anymore.

I will take a Black GSR, if it can be had with $2000 down, $599 + Tax a month for a 36 months lease.

There's a black local one who hangs out at this plaza I visit on Saturday nights.  I'll ask about his car the next time I see him...

Sorry GD...I never did get the call from him...so I'm playing hard to get...which is what I am...with cars anyway. Grin

I'm in no rush...but if this thing (any thing) blows me away...I'd be in.  Trouble with me is that I'm influenced by a performance feel...which may have nothing to do with performance numbers.  So...if it feels like I'm going 50 kph when I'm going 100 kph...then I likely won't feel that impressed by it.

I also promised myself my next car would NOT have a black interior...I'm sick of those after 20 years.

Worked out lease payment.  There is no way you could get it for that price.  I think lease rates are about 8%
