Its a contest between the Civic and Corolla. Civic's engine has grown to 2.0L while Corolla is still marching on with the 1.8L. That might make a difference.

As Mitlov rightly pointed out, these vehicles are considered the 'compact' class.

So, do we have the results yet?  Grin

Civic is still 1.8L

Civic SI is 2.0L and the CSX-S is 2.0L also I believe. Not sure about the vanilla CSX.

Thanks for the correction. This will be very very close then, Civic had a 1.7 last time around.

Yep, Civic should edge out the Corolla based on aerodynamic styling.  However, my guess for 3rd is the Mazda3 edging out the Ford Focus.

Here's the original 50-Litre challenge, for those interested.  I'm betting the Civic and Corolla will come in the top two spots again, both making it past the 1000-km mark.

Civic is still 1.8L

Civic SI is 2.0L and the CSX-S is 2.0L also I believe. Not sure about the vanilla CSX.

Regular CSX has the base RSX engine (2.0 litre producing 155 hp).


My bet is on the Corolla; it's definitely more aerodynamic, even though it doesn't appear as such. 

Also, last competition's Civic (7th gen.) had less HP and less displacement, so i'm having a hard time believing that Civic will win again this year.

We shall see.  Looking forward to the results.

*Edit: Given the current gas pricing, i'm very interested in finding out real-world results provided by this test.

The 09 Corolla is heavier, but the TC ratings are the same thanks to aero and engine tweaks, so I don't expect the Corolla to make any gains.  But, it has more safety gear and more power.

The Civic has a larger engine than in 05, but again, the TC ratings are about the same.

I think the Civic and Corolla will duke it out for #1, and will be within 50km.

No, the Sentra's figures are overly optimistic. I have the CVT and I don't find it that economical.

Let's hope the testers do what Consumer Reports does this time. Don't use cars provided by the companies for the purpose of the test. Who knows what was provided the last time. Honda, for instance may have provided a their high gear ratio Civic, a car that is built in Canada but not for sale here. The testers should obtain the cars without letting the companies know what they will be used for.

Also, rather than dealing with trying to drain 5 litres out of those cars that have 55 litre tanks, why not just give us the litres/100 km results of the test.

If you have the cash to buy 13 cars worth ~$20,000, please feel free to donate it to us! Seriously, I wish we could do that, but the budget really is not there. Plus, if we did that for this test, then wouldn't we be obligated to do the same for every car we tested, so as to be consistent? Again, I wish, but it's never going to happen.

The Civic we got last time was indeed a car that was for sale here, as were all of the others. The Civic's gearing was actually on par with the other cars. If I recall, it was actually a little shorter than some of the other cars' gearing.

I honestly don't think the manufacturers' PR departments are so shifty that they'd send us ringers. That used to happen in the 70s, when press cars were modified to make more power than stock.

I think the Civic to which I am referring is the HX. Was only sold in the States.

You have more faith than I. Your criteria were for the companies to provide the most efficient model. It would be very easy and perhaps beneficial for Honda to slip that in.

Anyway, I look forward to the results.
