This wasn't a real-world test. Here in the Okanagan we have no lightly-traveled secondary highways with level grades and nice, wide shoulders. The huge volume of summer traffic causes traffic jams that often stretch for miles on the major highways - no cruise control here - and days when you can drive without A/C are few and far between. The summer heat also means the air is less dense which has a negative effect on fuel economy. In the last week we made a couple of trips to Grand Forks from Vernon, about 500kms return. One trip involved night driving in the rain which meant cooler temperatures and only some very intermittent A/C use to keep the windows from fogging. Our average speed was lower, 90 - 100kph where during a clear day it would be more like 110 -120kph depending on the flow of traffic. The road itself is in reasonably good condition but has lots of steep grades and sharp switchbacks which combined with heavy truck traffic can slow progress to a crawl. The Versa (A/T) gave us 16.9kms per liter or 845kms (525 miles) on a 50L (11 gal.imp.) tank. That's 5.9L/100 kms or roughly 48 MPG, which is pretty damned good. On the next trip conditions were totally different. It was hot for one thing, up to 32C which meant the A/C was on for the whole trip, and our average speed had to be higher just to stay with the flow of traffic. (If you've ever driven that road, you know why you DON'T want to be a roadblock  ) That time we got 14.7kms per liter or 735 kms (457 miles) on a 50L (11 gal.imp) tank, or 6.8L/100 kms, about 41 MPG. Still good, but a notable difference. Given the same conditions as the Challenge I think the Versa would've been close to the top in the rankings , but that NEVER happens here.  |

Well, I looked at the list again. The challenge was for compact cars, not sub-compact cars. Nissan Sentra belongs there. Versa is Nissan's sub-compact offering in hatchback and sedan form. Or call it a crossover. |

By what measurements? The Versa's almost identical in all categories to the Matrix/Vibe including wheelbase, length, interior room, engine size, you name it. It's substantially larger than the Yaris or Fit and has a larger, more powerful engine, and it actually outdoes the Matrix/Vibe in some key areas, most notably rear leg room. I must've missed something here... |

I was giving my opinion of the test and curious as to why the Versa wasn't included - if you've ever seen a Versa parked next to the much smaller Yaris, you'd know why. I'm sorry if you perceive that as taking offense. |

Zombie, I drove pretty much all the cars, I don't think I drove the Hyundai or the Kia though.
The Versa wasn't included because the Sentra was included in the COMPACT segment of vehicles. Yes the Versa is larger than a typical compact but Nissan has chosen to call it a sub-compact. |

Appologies if this has been discussed previously, but what exactly was asked by each manufacturer to supply? did you ask for the most fuel efficient powertrain combo? It seems strange that anyone would supply anything but the best FE combo for a test of FE, right?
Take the G5 for example, the manual is rated at 5.9l/100kms hwy versus the auto at 6.4
Also, I thought it was strange to have received a manual Civic as i thought the auto was better on gas. But, there appears to be a difference between us and CN FE estimates and in Canada the manual appears to be the most efficient - is there an actual difference between the us and CN auto cars?
US:
5-Speed Manual (City/Highway/Combined) 26/34/29
5-Speed Automatic (City/Highway/Combined) 25/36/29
Canada:
Automatic transmission (City/Hwy) 8.2/5.7
Manual transmission (City/Hwy) 7.4/5.4
from minute i saw the car spec listing, i already knew this challenge is not doing a fair comparison. some cars are M/T some are A/T and some are CVT. transmission is a crucial factor in determining fuel efficiency and if they can't make the whole car line to have the same transmission this test comparison really means nothing. |
