Does the country matter or the brand matter more when purchasing a new car?

None matter.

Japanese cars are made in USA, Canada.

GM's Chinese made cars (some of them) are stunning compared to their lineup here.

Some of the Japanese cars are more American than the American brands.

So, this doesn't matter, its only for chest thumpers.  :P

Impossible to vote, cars are made in various countries even if the brand is sourced in only one country (eg. Toyota is Japanese, but made in Canada and US as well). Chevrolet is GM brand but some are made today in Korea and soon, China.

As to country of the headoffice, I would select Germany and Japan as the tops. It is rather meaningless, however.  ???

I'd say brand matters more than country now.

Made in Japan all the way, baby.  It's hard to find stuff made in Japan these days, though.  If it's quality we are talking here, Japan has no peers.

Oh, I dunno 'bout that.  Subarus are made in Japan and the US, and there seems to be no difference in quality.  Canadian made Toyota products are rated among the best made Toyota products.
No place I'd rather be...

Iceland.  I hear they make cool cars.

Seriously, according to auto journalists (and who says they know any better  ;) ), GM makes some of the most solid and reliable cars these days.  Unfortunately, we won't know if this statement is true until "these days" becomes 10, 15, 20 years.  I've owned a lot of GM cars in the distant past and almost all of them were garbage.  In '88, I bought "The Best Vette Yet".  It was in the shop ever other month.  In '90, I bought "The King of the Hill" Vette, the BEST one every built.  It too, was in the shop every other month.  Warranty?  If you think paying them their $100.00 deductible every time I took it in was cheap, you've got a different opinion of "covered under warranty" than I.  They might make good cars today, but "God forgives!  I hold a grudge damned near forever!"  Good thing I never owned one of the first Hondas in this country.  You don't forget these things and it takes a lot for them to make up for what they did years ago.  Oh, and don't get me going about Ford.   >:(

Sure there are some good N/A made cars by Japanese manufacturers but the biggest black marks on Honda and Toyota were on US manufactured cars.  I am hard pressed to think of a Japanese made car, sold here that had some notorious defect of the major kind.

Almost. He has to put every sentence in a different paragraph to be the true anti-barrie.

I can do that, but I think my high school English training would forbid me from doing it and feel good about it.  There should be at least some sentence and paragraph structure on the internet.  I mean, good spelling is nearly non-existent.

So do the Japanese firms not have the same quality standards when manufacturing cars in the US and Japan?

Are the Japanese and German cars more reliable or better build quality, as they appear to have the most votes?

Have to admit I am tempted by a Japanese car now.
