First Drive:
2009 Ford Escape

2009 Ford EscapeAfter redesigning the Escape for 2008, Ford has made more changes to the 2009 model, including a bigger, more powerful four-cylinder engine, a more powerful V6 engine, new six-speed automatic transmission, and greater availability of the manual transmission.

This puts the 2009 I-4 equipped Escape in a dead heat in a head-to-head drag race with the 2008 Escape V6.
Hate to have just bought an '08 V6  Tongue

available for 2009 is a five-speed manual transmission available in the XLT and I-4 Limited models
5-speed on Limited? Hmmm. How about 5-speed 4x4?

How is it possible that after electricity has traveled through hundreds of miles of power line then hundreds of feet (or yards) of romex in our home, that changing the last three feet of wire with something exotic, expensive (cool looking, and packaged in a pricey box) is going to make a difference?

People are probably just unsure of how to react to a positive-and-inoffensive review of a practical-and-inoffensive cute ute.  What's to flame?  Wink  You can't have the "four-cylinders are the future" rant because they've improved the four-cylinder.  You can't have the "where are all the manual transmissions going?" rant because they've actually increased their availability.  You can't have the "god the styling is awful" rant because, while not ground-breaking, the styling really is pleasant and inoffensive throughout.  You can't have the "I hate gunslit windows" rant because it has quite a large greenhouse with minimal blind spots.  You can't have the "what about the environment?" rant because the Escape Hybrid is a very, very good hybrid option.

I'm not a Ford fanboy--they're actually one of my least favorite overall--but it's hard to deny that this is a very, very solid offering for people who want a practical cute ute.

I guess, while the Escape is a very decent vehicle overall, it's still old despite the incremental improvements made by Ford.
Until the new crop of European designs arrive - Kuga, Focus, Fiesta, well, there isn't really too much to talk about Ford vehicles.

I think you nailed it Mitlov - something for everyone. Quieter, stronger platform, better handling, more power and better fuel economy all in an inoffensive package. It is just what the '05 refresh should have been and certainly should have been done on the '08 redo Poke Better late than never I suppose Tongue

 I Agree
The way it works is that if a Ford generates a positive review it results in silence from the peanut gallery that would love to trash it but know they would look foolish to do so. If a review is at all negative, the comments will come fast and furious.

To top it all, its the best selling vehicle in its class. By year, by month, by most competitive measures.

Look at MkII's post on the new Ford transmission.   That would go nicely in the Escape. In fact put in the  the whole power train from the EuroFocus TDCI and you'd have a direct competitor to the Tiguan at probably a bit less money

I like everything about the new Escape except the styling...  though to be fair, the styling is not all new, so maybe it's a wash.  In any event, I find the newer models to be too boxy, and much preferred the old look.

Still, I'll agree it's one of the best offerings in its class.  Were I in the market for this type of vehicle, the Escape Hybrid and Escape I4 would definitely be near the top of my list...

Ford.ca is still showing the 4 speed auto and I didn't notice if they offered the upgraded 4cyl yet. Anyone seen Ford's new "odd" website? For me, the Escape's mid to long term quality is still an issue.

I am thinking of purchasing a 2009 Ford Escape in 4 cylinder form this summer when it hits the lots.  I love the changes Ford brought to this vehicle: standard sync, new 4 cylinder, improved efficiency.  However, I can't help but notice the overuse of electrical tape to cover wires especially around the plug wires.  What's up with that?  Whatever happened to plastic conduit? Roll Eyes  Anyways, this won't stop me from purchasing it.

Which car uses conduit? Huh

I think he means that black corrugated conduit.  Most cars use that, my S2000 certainly uses it extensively, and then there is tape right at the ends to block water from getting into the conduit.
