When asked, Volkswagen reps said that the company is "working on" a diesel version of the Tiguan, but said such a vehicle is at least two years away. The 2.0-litre TDI that will be available in 2009 Jettas didn't make the grade as VW wasn't confident that it would operate as cleanly in the harsher conditions (occasional off-roading and towing were the examples given) the Tiguan was designed for.

Isn't that what makes a diesel a better choice?

Yes, when they have programmed the engine ( and transmission)  to meet all emission standards AND have its performance envelope right in towing and off road service.

And that diesel is the best of the wide diesel Tiguan offerings available elsewhere?

Come on VW... NA is ready!

Maybe they're implying that a 6 cylinder diesel is on the way.  But this would be more thirsty??

How difficult can that really be? Afterall the big brother in the family has no problem offering a diesel. I think the new rules and prices for diesel are making VW hold off and waiting to see how the Jetta TDI sales go.

Chris wrote ... "though the Tiguan does without the nearly useless third-row seat Toyota offers."

The nearly useless third-row seat was a big reason why I just bought a Rav4.  To get 7-passenger seating in a compact package with great fuel economy (Ok, great for an SUV), it was the clear winner for us.  I will admit the third row is not great adult space, but we want it so our (young) kids can bring their friends along on day-trips - I'm not about to pay at the pump every time I fill up so that our kids' friends can have extra creature comforts.

Cheers,
Brian

 :iagree:

The third row is a nice option to have all things considered for those 'just in case' local-drive scenarios, and in an all new design, unforgivable.

BUT, I assumed when the new CRV showed up sans a V6 option and a third row vis a vis the Rav4 it was the Honda's equivalent of the then-new Freestar - launched (then staunched) by a mid-cycle facelift and a innovative 2nd row F&F seating in the Caravan trumping Ford's hitting Chrysler's product bang on - but now the previous generation target.

Turned out not the case for CRV, despite it's 'shortcomings' relative to Rav4.

Likely the same bright future for the Tigi.

A third-row seat is still the exception, not the rule, in the cute ute (compact crossover) market.  The RAV4 and the Outlander have it.  The rest don't.  That includes the CRV, Rogue, Escape/Tribute, CX-7, Vue, Compass/Patriot, Tucson, Sportage, Forester, X3, and GLK.  So while you may miss the third row, it's certainly not an "unforgiveable" shortcoming in the current market.

Some lead, others follow, Miti.

Your logic would suggest that we should all still be struggling with 50lb benches out of minivans instead of flip and fold, or twist and sit.

Most of the cars you reference all folled down the CadCam system and launched the same time the Rav4 and Outlander came of the drawing boards, or in the case of the comparative antiques of the Tribute and Escape, a generation old.

Tigi is really the first to come off the line post-Rav4.  It's coming, in the next generation.

Count on it.

Not quite true there TOL - Mazda Cx-7, new Tribs and Escape and the mighty fine looking Forester all stay true to the five is fine theory. Even the Vue is a fiver.

Not everyone needs three rows. Some people like to haul things such as weekend suitcases etc without having to lose the roof with a Thule or whatever. And personally after seeing that third row in some of those that do, I wouldn't wish that space on anyone.

Aside from AWD, I don't see what this brings to the table over the Jetta Wagon.

You get to sit higher and have less cargo space. Some people will pay more for that.

Which would be a biggie for me, but then again why not get a Passat Wagon? Nicer looking than either the Tig or Jetta.

This is a near perfect vehicle IMO.

The driving position is fantastic. No competitor is better, most are far worse. It accomodates both shorter and taller people. Legs can be stretched forward to the pedals instead of your knee feeling as though it's directly over them. Getting in and out of the vehicle is easy, as it's not truck-high or unweildly.

Rear seat room is also very impressive. Hatch space less so, but very functional nevertheless with boxy proportions.

Interior quality is fantastic and the layout logical.

Pana roof is great, although other competitors are introducing them as well. Few have the slick power shade though.

2.0T strikes great balance between power and economy (finally there's a timing chain for lower maintenance costs). Similarly, ride is reportedly sporty-firm yet not bone jarring.

Also is one of the most compact vehicles in segment. I wouldn't wish a 3rd row into it.

Pricing is decently competitive. Equipment set complete with luxury features (AFS bi-Xenons, dual zone climatronic, pana roof, Dynaudio, NAVI with BLUETOOTH) available for less than luxury brands.

Really, it's a very complete well-rounded compact-yet-roomy package.

Wish the manual was available with 4MOTION and the diesel was here already. In every market it seems the Tiguan has become a much bigger hit than initially anticipated, and I've heard there's an 11 month wait list in Europe. Tiguan was delayed for North America largely because of this. I fully expect it to be received as well here. And suspect for as long as VW can sell the diesels overseas for more, we will continue to be deprived unfortunately.

PS, thanks Chris for the tip on the 4MOTION badging... I was wondering whether Canada would get them and was surprised to see it on US models. Understand that in Canada we don't get FWD Comfortlines and Highlines so the badge isn't really needed, but I'd probably add one myself if I bought one  :D

Interestingly, Tiguans went on sale in the US a few weeks earlier than Canada, but they won't have the Jetta SportWagen for a month or two yet but they've been on sale here for 2+.
