$36 for oil change at the local Mazda dealership, including check tyre pressures, and a free car wash, which I always pass.

Once you get it done elsewhere, how do you get the maintenance minder to reset?

Hi Julie,  check the owners manual.  It should be in there.  I think its something like 'turn key to acc'  then press and hold the 'trip meter reset knob' for five seconds.   ;)

My Accord came back from this service with a brake light out (Birchwood Honda West) .  Makes you wonder how thorough the rest of the inspection was.  They also wanted $189 for spark plugs (4).  That's probably the last time I go to the dealership.

The Subaru dealer is constantly telling me to come in and pay them a hideous amount of money for nothing.  See, if you go down and give them $400-500 and they don't do anything, it's all pretty much pure profit.  Makes business sense to me.  Wish I'd thought of a way for our clients to pay us and we did nothing.

Okay, they don't say, "give us the dough and we don't do anything for it."  But, 99% of the "service" is BS inspections.

Back in 1990, I paid a whack of dough to an Acura dealer for "inspections."  They told me that the brakes (thems not the breaks) were at 60% front and rear.  Three weeks later I was having some brake issues (the brakes seem to be breaking) and I took it back.  The fronts were worn right down to the backing plates.  I raised bloody murder and got the previous "inspection" service refunded.

That was the day that I learned that the "inspections" at dealerships are just a way to steal your money.

No, I take it in with a list of things for them to do.  Fluids and filters and stuff like that.  I'm not going to pay two to four hours of labour for you to honk the horn (which is not done) and make sure the lights work (though they 'd miss it if they weren't working).

One major purchase decision for the 'Rolla was the VERY clear service schedule that is shockingly inexpensive, lacks padding and is clearly designed to appeal to someone exactly like me, that won't pay for BS-inspections.
No place I'd rather be...

I noticed that too on my Civic:
oil change = $40
oil change + "inspections" = $200

I think I have to do it now, while it's on lease and warranty.

For later - how hard is it to get to the oil filter? The Haynes manual warns about burning my arm on the exhaust pipe. I worked on m y friend's '94 Mazda 626 - the filter is quite hard to reach.

I do my own oil change on my Civic.  Yes, you have to watch out for the exhaust pipe if it is hot.  The oil filter is practically right over it.  Another thing is once you've loosen the filter it likes to drip oil down your arm and exhaust pipe and whatever else in the way.

No, you don't.  If the dealer tells you that, they're flat out liars and don't deserve another dollar of your business.  You can do ALL the service yourself at home and they must honour the warranty.  Just keep your parts receipts and make a service log just in case.  There is no way, under consumer law, that the dealer can force you to buy their services to keep your warranty.
