Test Drive:
2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V6

2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V6As fuel prices continue their upward spiral, the V6-powered VW Touareg may be a wiser choice than the V8-powered model, conjectures contributor, Haney Louka.  It's also less expensive while still offering good performance and a lovely interior, he says.

Without the TDI this thing is a lame duck.

It gets better fuel economy than a Land Cruiser, it's closest competitior.  Heck, it  gets 85% of the fuel economy of your car.  Not bad for a rock-crawler.  (Source: www.fueleconomy.gov).

How is a 3.6L V6 a competitor to a 5.7L V8?
Oh and the Touareg also has a 4.2L V8 which gets worse MPG then the Land Cruiser and is 1.5 litters smaller.

Yeah, like anyone's gonna take an almost 60 grand luxo-barge rock-crawling. Gimme a break - these things never go further off-road than the parking lot at the kiddie's ballet school. A neighbor down the street has a mint '05 that he's been using like a regular car, but it's so expensive to run that he's been trying to sell it for the last 2 months. No takers yet.

Hopefully these dinosaurs will be extinct soon.

The reviewer was seeing 18+L/100kms during the test on premium. That is like 19L/100km on regular which is serious fuel useage territory for a vehicle this size. Even my father's Yukon Denali with the 6.0L was seeing 16L/100km (on regular) when I borrowed it for a week last winter.

The Touareg is on my short list when I go vehicle shopping next spring but only with the 3.0L TDI.

With fuel price forecasts in the US in the $3.75-$4.25 range through end of 09, good luck to VW on moving these.  Maybe they should introduce a gasoline V-10 version that demolishes the 20L/100km mark and costs $20K more?  Then when they don't sell they could blame high labour costs and other crap...
