Only in America.

A new Hyundai Accent is only $2000 or so more, comes with a great warranty.

I'd be a happy ebay seller too if someone is willing to bid and pay $7300 for my old car.

The older Swifts/Metros etc aren't bad cars at all and seem to hold up fairly well while getting amazing milleage. $7300 though is a crazy amount to pay for one no matter what the condition of the car. There was a decent Swift for $1500 not that long ago on autotrader.ca

Talk about pennie wise and pound foolish!  ::)

Solomon toyed with the idea of purchasing a Prius but decided that for a price of $7,300, the Metro was the more economical option.

The Metro is an investment in the future, Solomon said, even if she did pay more than five times the Blue Book value of the car.

Did she get a subprime car loan too?

Gas prices are only going to go up.  When gasoline hits $5/gallon down there, suddenly spending money now to save money in the future won't look so silly.  Still, $7300 for a Metro is nutty...  I wouldn't pay more than $2000 for one.

I think it shows there's a market for more fuel efficient, less safety-oriented cars.

Thank God - enough with the tanks, already.  ::)

A real opportunity for the Chinese and Indians to exploit when they come into the NA market.

Just put the steering wheel in the DOWN position and the drive feels much better - watz up with that??

My mother just bought a Scion xD (about the size of a five-door Yaris) to be her daily driver, and is restricting her six-cylinder Outback to more occasional use.  So there's some real interest out there.  I think this whole "paying $7300 for a Geo Metro" thing is just a dumb fad, but there is a growing interest in smaller, more fuel-efficient cars down here.

$7300 would net you a nice Toyota Echo that would probably be not that much less fuel efficient than the Geo and would offer more safety features to boot. A newer VVT-i engine might polute less as well.

Not much different in Europe, 20 y/o Golf Mk2 diesels are selling for the price of 10 year old Renaults.

Agreed! :)

I have seen some Swifts/Metros/Fireflys asking around $3500 but they are the last ones before the DAT Swift+ (the Korean built ones).

I have seen several nice examples for $2000-$3000 that would make a great first car for someone.

If you have a budget of $7000-$8000 and want something fuel efficient and reliable I can't see anything beating a used Toyota Echo. How much better is the milleage on a Swift/Firefly/Metro (1.3L 4 cylinder) versus the 1.5L mill in the Echo? For that matter how much more fuel efficient is the 1.0L 3 cylinder cars versus the Echo? Probably not that much better. I have a lot of seat time in the previous gen Swifts as I had a friend in Ottawa with an early 1990s 1.0L Swift and I had another friend who used to drive me to work in his 1996 1.3L Swift. Nothing wrong with the cars but they felt like small economy cars.

For that kind of money there are other better, newer alternatives out there.

I don't know what kind of MPG the 1.0L got, but my 2005 Echo hatch has got down to 4.7 L/100 KMs on highway. When doing mainly city, the worst I got was about 6.5 L/100 and I have near twice the horsepower the 1 litre engine had. I wonder what a light car with a very modern 3 cylinders would achieve...

Maybe my car's value will go up now ?  :)
