A new company hopes drivers will kick the oil habit by brewing ethanol at home that won't spike food prices.

E-Fuel Corp. yesterday unveiled the "MicroFueler" touting it as the world's first machine that allows homeowners to make their own ethanol and pump the brew directly into their cars.

The portable unit that sells for US$10,000 resembles a gasoline station pump and nozzle -- minus the slot for a credit card, or the digital "SALE" numbers that whir ever faster at retail pumps as global demand pushes fuel prices to record levels.

The pump's back end plugs into home power and water supplies to make ethanol for as little as US$1 a gallon, E-Fuel says.

It says one of the machine's top selling points is its sweet tooth. It ferments fuel from sugar, the price of which is historically cheap as global supplies are glutted.

That means it avoids the Achilles heel of today's U. S. ethanol system -- reliance on corn -- which has been blamed for helping to spike global food prices.

"There's no mother in America crying that their kids aren't getting enough sugar," Tom Quinn, CEO and founder of E-Fuel, said in an interview.

Convert it to make moon shine.  :)

Sounds like a fermenter.   Probably no different than making your own wine or beer.

Fermentation alone won't get you much past 15-18% ethanol with any known yeast.  You need to distill to get to at least 80% preferably 99%.  If you can only get to 80% you will get corrosion from all the water.

AFAIK  most governments take a VERY dim view of distillation at home and even more, with no licence and no taxes paid... remember,  ethanol IS moonshine.

WE are actually allowed to produce for our own usage something around the figure of 75 Gals I beleive of alcohol. It can be made from potatoes, Pumpkins or many other types of fruit of vegetables as long as it contains sugar in it to act as a castilist in producing a reaction.  :)

Barrie, let me quote for you from the AGCO, the Ontario regulators of all things alcoholic.

"6. Can I make alcohol at home?
You may make beer or wine at home as long as it is only for your personal consumption or to be given away free of charge. Homemade (or "u-brew") beer or wine may not be sold or used commercially.

Homemade spirits and the use of a still in a person's home are illegal under the Excise Act of Canada.
