2007 Yaris Hatch... My first hatchback!
« on: May 08, 2008, 11:42:29 am »
Hi All,

Some of you may have been following my recent journey to snag a second car for our household. The search was not defined enough at the beginning and I probably got way too far off track at times. My search started with a Kia Rondo and I still think this is one cool vehicle. It was just not in my budget at this time although I could see snagging one off of a lease in 3 years time with about 60000kms on the clock.

From there I went to off lease Corollas, Civics, new Fits and Yaris, used Yaris, slightly used Sonatas etc.

In the end my wife and I both loved the Fit and Yaris and felt that they were the perfect second car for us as we have our Civic for when we need a trunk or a bit more room. Why get a bigger car if you don't need it? When the Civic is ready to move on then maybe a Kia Rondo, Camry or some other larger vehicle.

We spent a lot of time discussing the merits of new versus used. A car is only new once and the first couple of dings on the Civic were downright painful. Frankly aftr a month or so the Civic was "just there". So, we made a conscious choice to try to buy a used car this time around with lower kms if possible.

Unfortunately our target vehicle -the Yaris- has not been around long enough to have off lease options out there and 90% plus of the examples are ex rental vehicles.

Well, I looked at literally dozens of Yaris hatches (and some Sedans) and while a nice blue example slipped through my fingers with just shy of 19000kms I did get the next lowest km hatch I could find with just over 30000kms (for a point of reference most of the ones I looked at had 44000kms or more and one had 80000kms!) and I got it for about $1000 less than the one with 19000kms and ours has more features and is the colour my wife wanted to boot!

When buying a used car I am a big believer in getting a trusted mechanic to give it the "once over". I now know that there is no overspray or frame damage anywhere, everything works well, and he found 2 tires with issues I would not have noticed. We now have 2 fresh tires on the front of the Yaris to start life with. $100 well spent!

Anyways here are some pics of our car. I have not waxed it yet, although the car was thoroughly shampooed and detailed before we picked it up.

Here are some random shots of the night we first saw the Yaris:

These cupholders in the dash are brilliant!

Now from a few nights ago when we picked up the car. Here it is ready to go to its new home:

I was driving behind my wife with our Civic and we got stuck for a good ten minutes at a railroad crossing waiting for a train to pass. Interestingly enough the train was packed with cars!
Here is my wife Michelle and Lucy our Pug enjoying the new Yaris. Lucy loves that she can see out of the Yaris easily. She sits too low in the Civic and misses out on the action...

See? I told you there was a train!

And... a few shots of the Yaris on the road from inside our Civic:

Not the world's greatest photo essay but better than nothing :D

It is a 5 door LE with the convenience package. So, ABS, keyless entry (yay!), power windows, power mirrors, power locks, CD player with 6 disc in dash + MP3. Oh, and a auto to appease my wife. It is orange which is a pretty cool colour actually.

Future plans for the car include adding cruise (which is a dealer installed option anyways), a used set of RS rims when I find a set for sale, and possibly a hood deflector to hopefully save the hood from a few rock dings.

I have not been able to pry the Yaris from my wife's hands as she really enjoys driving it. Although it is no rocket it is very peppy and responsive. It has a very tight turning radius and is fun to fling around.

The fuel economy so far has been stellar and the day I was taking it to my mechanic etc before we finalized the deal I ended up putting 150 kms on it in one day! It was very comfortable and the fuel gauge barely moved! With cruise I think this would be a great little car for a road trip. Very comfortable and great on gas. Wind gusts can move the car a bit on the 401 but not that much worse than the Civic in my opinion. It is a little "busy" at 120km/hr as it is turning around 3100 rpm. A 5 speed auto with a taller top gear would be nice to get the rpms down to 2700-2800.

All in all we are very happy so far and look forward to many years of motoring with our "new" Yaris.

Now to get both cars Krown treated in the fall.

I love the little dog. :)

Congratulations on the little car. I really hope you enjoy the car and your misses drives the car  alot more this time. By the sounds of it she might. I have to say the colour is odd. But I kind of like it. I wonder what a good wax would do to the paint work. :)

I wonder if a higher octane would make it less so. ???

Congrats on the New Yaris!  They're excellent little cars.

Don't worry about the buzziness,  I'm at 3500 rpm @ 120 km/h!

Smart car. Congrats.
Larger diameter rims and tires should lower the RPM but there may be not enough torque at highway speeds.

I had the sedan version for a week when my Camry was on the mend.

Agreed that its nice peppy car, great car for runabout trips. Its ok on the highway, you'll have to drop into 3rd to pass at speed. Nice find. Have fun.

Heh, I always thought the Yaris had a bit of a 'Pug' nose, no wonder the dog likes it! Congrats on the car, mechanically the Tercel > Echo > Yaris are apparently very similar, and about as bulletproof as they come. I think the auto is probably a good choice, I tried a Yaris at the car show and was surprised how stiff the clutch was for a little car. Rims and tires would probably be nice upgrade, ie the European SR.

Did you end up saving much over buying new?

Assuming I could not talk a new car dealer down we saved about $5500 versus buying new. :D

Of course buying new also had some great finance rates. We put most of this car on our Heloc and have already paid down some of it. Ideally we would like to finish paying the Yaris off in two years (another reason we wanted to save some money).

Wouldn't you know it? I had planned to take the Yaris today and my wife wanted it. So, I ask for it tomorrow and she wants it again! :o

I guess she really is enjoying the thing! As much as some other cars appealed to me I wanted us to find something that she liked. It helps that I really like the car as well. Maybe she will let me drive it this weekend or one day next week.

Jeesh! Here I thought this car was for both of us! ;)

Nice car, attractive wife, cute dog!    ongrats on the car!!  If my Echo is any indication (220,000+kms) you 're in for a reliable, easy-on-the-wallet car.  Switch it over to synthetics throughout and a TRD (like a K&N filter) and you can squeeze even better gas mileage from it.  Again...congrats.

Good idea on the synthetics. Might as well since we are looking long term with the car. We also have our oil changed at 5000km despite the 8000km in our owner's manual for the Civic. City milleage plus our climate = extra hard duty cycle for our poor vehicles!

Our Civic is coming up just shy of 60000kms at this point and I am planning on having the oil changed when I get the suspension creak sorted (I was going to do this last week but the symptoms subsided so I used the shop time to get the Yaris checked out instead).

Is it worth it to switch the Civic to synthetic now? What is the big benefit of synthetic versus regular oil? Is it less likely to break down? Does it provide better protection on engine start up and shorter drives? If so then both of our vehicles should be on this program to help protect the engines.

Better protection on start up, better lubricity, and more HP which equals better fuel mileage...

You sold me! Not that the fuel economy is an issue with this great little car! :winner:

The better protection is a plus in my book as both cars get city use and short drives. Anything to minimize damage to the engine and prolong the life of the car is good in my book.

From now on we will only put synthetic in our cars. Sounds like it is worth the extra $.

Congrats on the new ride.   You could try to sneak out in the middle of the night to drive it.  :)

I finally got to drive the Yaris today! :D

Lots of errands to do. We got top soil, grass sead, a LOT of groceries, some wine, filled up our propane tank for the BBQ, got a new pool for Lucy (she likes to swim on hot days), library books and DVDs and lots more.

Not a problem for the Yaris!

Oh, and there is a pizza in there too! ;D

I can't believe that the car swallowed all this stuff up and there was even more room for lots more! I am so pleased with the utility offered in this vehicle. I can't imagine how much more stuff a Fit could swallow!

This car could be a primary vehicle for many people. I feel like I am in a much larger vehicle when driving it and then I am shocked by how diminutive it looks when I park it. The fuel economy has been great all week as well. I guess you really can have your cake and eat it too. :D

The pizza was/is great! I still have a couple of slices to enjoy when we throw a movie on a little later.

As for fuel economy it seems to be somewhere between 4-4.5 L / 100km.

I look at the Yaris a bit more closely today and notice the map lights again which our 2001 Civic lacks. I also notice that the Yaris has the foam inside the front fenders like my parent's 2009 Corolla LE and just like the 2002 Sienna that I had a few years ago. Does Toyota put this still in all their vehicles (dark stryofoam in side the front fenders)? Even though this is a smaller car than our 2001 Civic it is much quieter both in the city and on the highway. Even with the smaller wheelbase it is also smoother over ruts, potholes etc.

I remember the jazzed up little Opal hatchback we drove around Italy a number of years ago on our honeymoon. It had a cool trip computer, higher end appointments, interior finishes etc. I remember thinking how cool a premium hatch was and how it was all we needed plus good fuel economy etc. The Yaris is like that for me. While I would have loved an RS version with a 5 speed manual for myself I see the Yaris (and the Fit) as "premium" sub compacts.

We have come a long way from the hatchbacks of 20-30 years ago.

I think my calculations might be a little off.

I need to start from a fresh tank and figure it out. The milleage does appear pretty amazing though! :)
