Passat: The first 12 months
« on: May 07, 2008, 09:44:36 pm »

Before I provide a subjective assessment of my first 12 months of driving an 07 Passat 2.0T here are some facts:

Warranty claims to date: Zero
Recalls: Zero

Model type: 2007 2.0T with Luxury-Leather option and 8 airbags.
Mileage done: 22,500 kms
Type of daily commute: 100 km round trip (mostly 401 outside of GTA)
Fuel type used: Usually Shell Premium 91. The Passat doesn't appear to react well to Esso Premium - noticeable level of hesitation when accelerating with the Esso ethanol stuff.
Highest speed achieved: 170 kph (fun but never again...)

Maintenance:
First service at 9,380 kms - Castrol Syntec oil change 5 litres 5W40 (109.86 dollars)
Second service at 17,950 kms - Castrol Syntec oil change ( 5 litres 5W40) and tire rotation ($127.43)
Topped up with a with a litre of 0W30 German Castrol Syntec @ 9 dollars each.

Total first year service costs: $246.29

Dealership experience:
Nothing to write home about. Efficient and get the job done - only speak when spoken to. Don't really respond well to email correspondence - so they lose points there. Have got over the initial culture shock that dealership doesn't wash car after service.

Things I like:
1) 2.0 Turbo FSI engine - very responsive at all speeds.
2) The brakes are amazing.
3) The night time interior dashboard illumination - new passengers are constantly amazed by sea of blue and red.
4) The turn indicators automatically blink 3 times when you tap it once. I've got so used to this that I forget to correct my behaviour when driving non-VWs.
5) The huge trunk and decent rear seat room for 3 rear passengers.

Things I don't like:
1) The manual is about 200 pages long and appears to have been written by a rocket scientist.
2) After driving at highway speeds for half an hour or so, there is an occasional noticeable hard downshift between gears 4 and 3 when coming off the exit ramp. This problem has been discussed extensively on VWVortex and appears to be linked to the torque convertor on the Aisin 6 speed transmission. I find I can avoid the hard downshift by switching to Tiptronic mode when decelerating.
3) The clock is embedded deep on the driver's instrumentation side.Passengers can't see the time and you get asked what the time is all the time.
4) The dual Climatronic air-con ain't exactly the most intuitive in the world. I only realized recently that unless I press the 'Econ' button than the air-con compressor comes on all the time even if you request for heat during winter.

Other stuff:
- The doors are super heavy. Not sure what kind of sheet metal the folks at VW use - but it feels like your encased in a bank vault. Guess this is a good thing.
- First time you open the driver door there is an electro-mechanical whirring sound. I found out later that it's primary fuel pump being activated.

Would I buy again: Yes
My level of ownership satisfaction: 9/10. Best vehicle I've ever driven.
Any regrets ?: Should have got the manual.

Nice report but I didn't see anything about your fuel economy to date. Do you track it or just don't care?

"Topped up with a with a litre of 0W30 German Castrol Syntec @ 9 dollars each." who is hosing you for that price
Check Wally Mart and CTC for 0w30, usually find it on sale for under $7

" 1) The manual is about 200 pages long and appears to have been written by a rocket scientist."

If your manual is anything like the Audi manual or the BMW manual its really on 150 pages as 52 pages are wasted on telling you how to put on seat belts and install car seats.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Nice report, I felt I could have written almost the same thing for my 2005 Passat  ;D

I hear you on the "clock" issue, "downshift" issue and extensive manual (in the case of the 2005, it comes it 3 volumes which was had to fit all in the glove box).

Also on the climate controls, I use to find it frustrating that there appeared to be missing a few settings I had on previous vehicles, namely defrost and feet warming at the same time.  Manual did not explain that nothing prevented you from turning the nob halfway between icons to access both  ;)  Now I'm actually really happy with this "feature" as I can control how much I want on defrost and how much on feet warming.

I love this vehicle on the highway and even better at night when my cockpit lights up in blue and red.

Same here, best vehicle I've ever owned.

Haven't really tracked fuel economy. I carpool with a couple of other guys and drive the commute every 3rd week so I'm less hurt by pump prices. Getting Air Miles Shell vouchers also helps.  8)

However I have achieved about 770 kms on a single tank of gas.

Glad you like yours. I quite like the previous gen B5 Passat - the design is timeless.

I wonder why the Passat designers decided to 'hide' the clock ? You can't exactly Google an answer for that and mysteries like that keeps me awake at night.  ;D

Have you asked your dealer about the downshift issue ? I don't find it an issue yet but I may ask at my next service.

I rented a TDi Passat in England last year, the same style as this one. My wife and I both agreed we preferred the styling of the previous generation. We didn't think it was incredibly comfortable and I hated how theparking brake was controlled using a button. A button?!?!!?  :o

Haha... the same thing happened with me. First time in the garage, I unlock the car, open the door, hear noise - hmmm... I wonder what that is -, open door again.. nothing.. hmm... Then one of my friends told me to relax. :D

I believe all VWs (1999 onwards) do that.   Yup, love that blue/red lighting.

My TDI never did the fuel whirring. May have heard it once or twice in the GTI, but noticed it all the time in a friend's Golf IV 2.0L.

Hear they're putting the clock also into the radio display now. Haven't seen it myself.

Had Climatic on the GTI and always had the 'Econ' on except for the odd summer day (turned off when you set it to defrost). I wasn't entirely sure how the system worked except when I turned Econ on and off and looked at the MFI's fuel consumption while idling - 0.9L/hour with Econ on while flickering between 1.3-1.4 Econ off (A/C on) - 30% more! Originally was sad my car didn't have Climatronic but honestly I really liked the simplistic Climatic (except was single zone, the only negative), as I could control the HVAC so effortlessly and exactly how I wanted things (easy temp changing, or setting between 2 vent levels as JBrill notes). VW has since changed 'Econ' with the light off meaning A/C is on, to relabeling the button 'A/C' with the light on meaning A/C is on.

I like the idea of the button e-brake - looking forward to it in my potential next vehicle. Don't really care for the Passat's key, would rather keyless detection like some competitors (LOVED this feature on the Highlander Hybrid I rented).

Glad to hear you're enjoying the Passat. I really miss my VW!
