Not many makers will step up after the warranty has expired. Mercedes used to, fixing problem head gaskets on M104 engines and replacing poorly designed 3.5L diesel engines years after the warranty had expired. However, the customers fo those cars had paid a great deal for the cars, and Mercedes was still in "we care what our customers think" mode. Those days are LONG gone.
On a modern car, there is no excuse for an engine to fail before 200,000kms, but it happens with regularity. I hate to say it, but the culprits are almost the "Big Three" exclusively.
