Where does Black Magic come from?
« on: May 04, 2008, 10:52:46 am »
Or what I really want to know is, can I get some without going to the U.S.?

I'm looking for Black Magic Wet Shine Liquid Wax. Can't find it and no one will ship it to Canada. Must be some dark magic. Does anyone know where I can find it in this country?

Same problem for Turtlewax T-6.

I have an old bottle of "Black Magic" sitting in my garage shelf.  I purchased it back in '88 at Crappy Tire (or it could have been Wally Mart) when I had a black Vette.  It was a marketing ploy by the product manufacturer for owners of black cars.  The claim was that it was specifically designed to make black paint look the best it could ever be (yeah, right!).  It was an OK product but it certainly wasn't any better than any other brand name car polish.  The only "magic" in it was that it magically sucked a few bucks out of my wallet.
Then came "Eagle 1 WET".  Same thing.  Advertised to make any paint job look like wet paint.  Again, it was OK, but no better than anything else out there.  I used that on my black Viper.
I've been using Zaino the past 8 years.  It's also very good but is certainly not worth the money or the effort to use it.  I don't fall for the hype anymore.  Once I use up my supply of Zaino, I'll get whatever Crappy Tire sells that is a known name and sounds easy to use.  Anytime you wash and prep your car, then wax or polish it, it's going to end up looking spectacular ---- till the next time it gets dirty.

Thanks xviper.

I, too, am leary of the hype, which is why I want the Black Magic Wet Shine or Turtlewax T-6. They get the best ratings on Consumer Reports, and they each cost 7 or 8 bucks.

Hype? Just wait until until the Meguiars fanboys find this thread...

Good luck in your quest.  If my bottle wasn't 20 years old and dried up, I'd send it to you.
You're right about the "fanboys".  Polishing and detailing a car can become an obsession for some.  I still run with the Zaino fanatics (but more as an outsider now).   :-X

I had a bottle of the Black Magic as well in the garage for many years. I asked my Dad years ago to bring some back from Florida with him one year when I had a black car to wax. I read all the hype about it as well and thought it would be worthwhile to try it. In the end, it was not all that it was advertised as.
I believe it was a petroleum based product if memory serves me.

Do you realize that in about 40 years, we'll have thousands of old ladies running around with tattoos?

The thing is, Black Magic has dozens of products, most of which are no better than anything else on the market. It just happens that their "Wet Shine" liquid wax gets the highest rating on Consumer Reports while having one of the lowest prices. (I trust CR on this because they posted their methodology and it looks thorough and solid.)

Whatever they were marketing specifically for black cars was probably a different product. (Besides, my car's not black.)

It appears to me that brand means nothing. Ditto for price. Turtle Wax is a good example; their more expensive "high end" products tend to suck in the ratings, with the exception of their $7 carnauba wax which is number 2 in the rankings. Mind you, I've called around and none of the good stuff is available in Canada.

Go to ebay.ca I just ordered the Black Magic for 13.48CAN$. Shipping was as much as the product but well worth getting the best wax.

The gentleman I did the feature on about detailing (Ken Wilson) is the Canadian distributor for many of the "good stuff" brands. He can also tell you some details about the origin of many of the typical consumer brands like Turtle Wax and Meguires. There is a link to his website and contact info on the first page of that feature. He seems to like to answer consumer questions, as he is involved with a number of 'detailing' forums.
