Hi All,

I am going to be taking over our Civic from my wife and she gets to use the 2007 Yaris we just bought (look for a post in the show and shine section in a week or so).

Our 2001 Civic did not come with remote entry (they added it as standard to the DX-G package in 2002 I believe) and over the years the lack of this convenience has started to bug me as I have become accustomed to this feature with other vehicles.

While I don't need remote starting it seems to go hand in hand with remote locking.

I see systems from Compustar, Nordic and Viper. Are any of these good systems? Are these things fairly inexpensive to install and will they screw up the electronics of our 2001 Civic?

Finally does anyone have a recommmended installer in the Guelph/Cambridge/Kitchener area? I am willing to go to Hamilton/Burlington/Ancaster if there is a recommendation for someone there.

This isn't very specific advice but as far as reliability, my parents had remote start / unlock installed in three different cars (two GMs and a Chrysler minivan) and they've never failed or had any hiccups.

With the more complex electronic immobilizer systems nowadays you need to buy fancy systems, but a 2001 Civic isn't exactly Lojack.
Everything in life is relative.

To bypass the immobilizer there are some low tech systems that need you to donate a chipped key to work and more complex ones that do not require a donor key.
I had the same problem with our 2001 Odyssey. I ended up buying the factory keyless system from the US and installed it myself. Not sure if they still supply the factory system for the 2001 Civic.

I removed an alarm system with remote locks from my Miata.

The actuator for the remote locking on the driver's side had seized for some reason. It had been like that for a year or so and the actuator had a date stamped on it: December 1999.

I don't know which systems are good or not but I can tell you that it's well worth it to find a good installer to do the installation. Even the best system can cause you nightmares if it is installed badly.
To err is human, to blame it on someone else is even more human.

Ha!

I found a thread where I asked about this 2 years ago! :D

Autostart and astrostart were two recommended brands.

What I really need to know now is if anyone has a recommendation for a good installer either in the tri-city area (i.e. Guelph/Kitchener/Cambridge), or the Hamilton/Burlington area.

Also, any recommended Krown dealers in my area? I want the Yaris done in a few months and I want our Civic done as well.

Someone posted links to wiring diagrams if you want to install it yourself.

I think you should check out www autopartsway.ca. They have a pretty comprehensive collection of automotive parts. I shop from there for all my cars and they have never let me down till now :D:D

By the way, you get free shipping also if you order for something valued more than 75 bucks!! I just bought alloys from there for my accord.
