There's a thing. Why should we NOT have to have cars/trucks inspected for safety every year/2 years/3 years ( pick one) at the owners expense.   Many Jurisdictions in the developed world do so with, IIRC, Japan being the most strict.
Politics I suspect. A whole pile of people would whine and complain that it was a "cash grab" and that their cars with bald all seasons and 2 year old wiper blades were perfectly safe... and of course the "activists" who would say that it discriminated against poor people.  I think it would be a good idea.  A full check including any Construction and Use violations. ( Jeeps with wheels protruding at the sides of the bodywork, jacked up pickups, slammed civics, all Chevy Cavaliers etc )

I can see the wisdom of this idea. I was waiting at the garage today to have the Yaris inspected and this nice young couple was waiting to have her car repaired (a 2001 Alero). It was finally getting somewhat undriveable so she finally brought it in. Totally shot tires with no tread, bumps in them, shot brakes, tie rods etc. The car looked nice but outside of oil changes (maybe) she just drove it and drove it until it got so bad she finally had to do something about it. The silly thing is that if she had of addressed some of the issues earlier maybe she would/could have saved some money.

I could see safety inspections every two years but then get rid of the dumb "Drive Clean". Our Civic has never been even close to a fail; probably because we try to maintain it well and replace filters regularly etc. Safety inpections plus drive clean? No thanks...

OPP Officer Charged Under Street Racing Law
Wednesday May 14, 2008
CityNews.ca Staff

As the Ontario Provincial Police scan the province's highways from the sky and the ground looking for dangerous and aggressive drivers there's word one of their own is facing charges under the new street racing law.

A 43-year-old Peterborough County OPP constable was allegedly clocked driving at least 50 kilometres over the sped limit on Highway 115, just south of Peterborough, on March 25 according to a published report. The officer was in his cruiser at the time.

Under the street racing law, which went into effect last September, a driver caught speeding 50 km/hr or more above the posted limit can have their licence and vehicle seized immediately. The maximum fine for the crime was also bumped up to $10,000.

On Tuesday police organizations from across the province gathered in Markham to kick off Project Erase (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere). Authorities say 42 people have been killed by speeders in the GTA since 1999.

Since the street racing law went into effect, more than 4,500 charges have been laid.

The officer charged in March has been moved to desk duty at his detachment and is scheduled to appear in court in June.

Lloyd Tapp is facing two charges under the street racing law.

If there is to be a safety check then surely it would include an emission check.

I recall having annual safety check and sticker in Massachusetts in the 80s. It's a cost of car ownership.

In NB, there's an annual safety inspection, I think it's $20, no emissions check required though.  It is also required for trailers (except small utility type trailers).
