2007 Scion tC
« on: April 21, 2008, 08:06:29 pm »
We are interested in a 2007 Scion tC from a dealer in Guelph. 2007MY tC was the only year that was allowed to be imported, according to the RIV list. Toyota Canada will honor the warranty fully.  :)

We haven't driven it yet, but if interested enough, we would go check it out and test drive it. This would be an addition to our Odyssey and TSX...I have read its a comfortable yet fun daily driver, and its not bad on fuel economy (2.4L from the Camry).

Any thoughts on this car?

Mine: 2004 Acura TSX
Family: 2005 Honda Odyssey EX, 2006 BMW 330i

Awesome car.  Reliable, decently sporty.  Has a HUGE aftermarket following in the US, and the engine is very robust.  Cool car IMO...
How fast is my Supra?  I sh*t on Cessnas from a roll....

Opt for the TRD supercharger and you've got something.  ;)  I find the tC bland and uninspired, and would much rather have a same-vintage Civic Si or low-mileage RSX-S.  But I think the Civic is going to be on the more expensive side, and the RSX-S will be older with higher mileage.  :/

Nothing wrong with the tC, just not for me...

I would like to add that this car would be shared among 4 drivers...my parents, my brother (16), and myself (18..19 soon!).

This means that it has to be automatic (mom... ::)), and insurance would be an issue. That automatically crosses out the RSX, Civic Si, WRX, etc. etc. That being said, we have NO idea on how much insurance would cost for a tC...

Another option would a be a used 06+ Civic/CSX sedan, but we are just exploring our options right now. So a tC would be more "sporty" than these two, IMO. The tC's price is currently at $20,995...a bit more than a used 06+ Civic, a bit less than a CSX.

Toyota will honour the warranty, yes, but are there any dealers that will work on a Scion?

Why not? I am sure the tC shares similar mechanicals with other Toyotas.

Is the tC really cheaper to insure than an RSX Premium?  I can see a Type S being costly, but the tC and RSX are in pretty much the same league...

*shrug*  If that's the case, then install that TRD Supercharger and have yourself some fun.  ;)

OK time to shift gears a bit and go into more "practical" territory.

Now the options are a 2009 Corolla S or LE (both start at 19,975 before negotiation) OR a 2006 Civic EX (about $17,000, private sale, 34k)...

The Civic would be more sporty, correct? But the Corolla is 3 years newer...and we already have a "Sports" sedan, the TSX, so...

hmmm.

Thats a really tough choice. I perfer the Honda. :)

Not really. Just a mix of the two. Just better all round to drive. The car is great in the bends and stays really flat. The styling I really like. The fit and finish is top notch. The dash takes a while to get use to. But once you do everything else seams old and stodgy. The gas mileage is unbelievable sometimes. It is that great. The engine is bit lazy. But then there is V-Tec.  Just under your foot waiting  to come out to play. most of the time I drive around normally. But V-Tec is always there when I need it when I want to be a boy racer. I find the engine can be little whiney in first gear when it is cold. But that is because it is 4 banger. Other than that it is very quiet engine. Also I have a base model so I hear more noise than an EX you also have different fabric on the seats. O' one more thing. There is no corners. You cant see the end of the car. For some people that might be an issue. If you are crap at parallel parking or have issue with not seeing the corners of the car. But I have never found that to be a problem. :)

The only thing I don't like. It is just to common. But no more so than a Corolla.  :)

New is always more attractive. Like I said tough choice. :)

Thanks for your thoughts, Cortina!

I have driven the new Civic twice already. The styling is great, but I cannot stand how I cannot see the hood or corners of the car (like you mentioned). Also, I don't like the steering wheel either, and the dash. It is very spacious, and the engine is smooth and refined, yet torqueless (thats to be expected from a 1.8L engine).

That being said, I would probably be driving the TSX most of the time, so these wouldn't really matter to me.

We are leaning towards the Corolla because of the value it offers...but we will see. Will keep everyone updated.  :)

All the Hondas are going to have that wheel. I find in the summer it makes my hand feels slightly tender sometimes on really hot days. Most of the time It feels like soft rubber. Not at all like a normal hard plastic steering wheel.  :)

Also, in the summer when all the windows are closed and you first get in. It seams some how cooler than any car I have owned. I don't find it tiring to drive for long periods of time either. ;)

Sounds like the choice has already been made. Go with ya gut. :)

Ah I see. It would be nice to keep this an all "Honda" family...but we aren't going to be biased towards brands.

EDIT: My father just went and checked out the 2006 Civic EX....Galaxy Grey color. 36,000 kms. A retired couple from outside London currently owns it , it wasn't winter driven because they spent the winters in Florida. It drove GREAT (according to my Dad). It has Krown Rust Protection, hood deflector, Honda floormats, 35% tint, etc. They are willing to sell it for $16,750 (advertised for 18.3k), since they already bought a Ford Taurus (500) from Florida through a broker.

Decisions ... :P

I have that colour. Birds love it too. Sounds like a deal. If you can get past the dash. Trust me once you get used to it. Your love the car. It drives so nice that your soon forget about the negatives. Check the service records as it is first year of production for anything out of the ordinary. ;)

Trust me these car drive oh so nice...... :-*

Agreed... they are very nice driving cars.  Ours is black (wife's choice), but my parent's is Galaxy Grey... it is a very nice colour.  Sometimes wish we got it over black.
