That is one awkward looking BMW. It reminds me of the Outback Sedan.

To those who've been clamoring for a 5-series hatchback on stilts, your car has arrived.  Undecided

I am going to hold any comments on the X6 until I have seen/driven one. I can't say I'm crazy about the looks, particularily the rear end.

What I could hope for is to see that new TT 4.4L V8 show up in the 2010 5 Series. That would be an interesting car, IMO.  Grin

To those who've been clamoring for a really expensive, really fast AMC Eagle, your car has arrived.  Undecided

Fixed Smiley

The X6 is the ultimate form-over-function vehicle.  Those engines are great...but would be even greater in a more-useful X5 or a better-handling 5-series.

But this will sell because

1. Yuppies will say "Oh its a BMW!"
2. Yuppies will say "I don't want people to think I'm driving an SUV!"
3. Yuppies will say "Great! I can goon everyone off the road with this! And its tall!"

I would have liked to be a fly on the wall at the focus groups that wanted this thing.

BMW have coupes in 3 sizes( 4 if you count the Z4M) .  Sedans in 3 sizes( 4 if you count the Euro 1-er).   SUVs in two sizes.  Convertibles in 3 sizes.
Why would such a small car company want this thing which is not one or t'other?    Introducing it at a time when the affluent part of the middle classes is short of money as well.

I guess everybody wants to have a chance at being first at something.  Wink

Personally, I think its hideous and a dumb idea but clearly I'm not the target market. I didn't see any pricing in the article though....how much will that V8 cost? I'm sure the replacement rubber (21 inches  Shocked ) could easily finance a 2 month vacation for me.

I imagine that is the starting price of the 35i? How much more for the 50i?

Wow!

Ok, this  brings the forthcoming Toyota Venza in play. Similar concepts. So the well-to-do yuppies and the yuppies battle it out.

I thought it was a silly vehicle to begin with, and for that kind of money...  Wow.

I wouldn't compare them.  The Venza (1) isn't the same shape (I'd say it's just a raised wagon with proper rear-seat headroom, not this four-door-raised-coupe-thing); (2) is FAR FAR FAR cheaper and less powerful (it's available with a naturally-aspirated inline-four or a N/A V6, not a twin-turbo V6 or a twin-turbo V8).

I see the Venza as an Outback/Taurus X competitor.  Not sure what competes with the X6.

I am talking up perception. Specs wise no comparision at all.

Niche vehicles, new kind of cross overs.

True, they both took their midsizer (X5 and Highlander) and subtracted utility while adding some style but not any practical advantages.

Couldn't agree more on that. Even a true BMW fanboy is disappointed.

I spotted one in the dealer lot today, and it's one gorgeous looking SUV.  The rear fascia screams 8-series.

You know what, it would be even better if they could keep the styling but make it a sedan instead.  Then you'd have a CLS competitor.  Wow, what a great idea!
