$600 clutch kit
« on: April 13, 2008, 10:17:08 pm »
WTF?  :o  $600 for the clutch kit for my car from Honda Dealer in Canada.

Ordered from the US $237 including tax and shipping AND the clutch alignment tool which I didn't bother to price out here in Canada.

This is getting ridiculous IMO.

While I'm down there I'm going to grab 2 garage door openers.  CHamberlain 1/2 hp belt drive only $198 including 2 remotes, keypad and monitor, that's the same price as chain drives here!  Heck you can get a chain drive for $125 in the US.

WOW!   :o   I'm used to seeing some things at 20/30/40% more here but that's well over 200% higher!

And while you’re down there you should look for American businesses to advertise on this site.

I feel your pain.  I like to support Canadian business, but when things are 2x as much (especially when our dollar is strong) I can't justify it...

You would not believe the pressure we are getting to send engineering work to US consultants due to our backlog and lack of people here.

One project was going to “send” $40M worth of engineering to Brazil but was convinced to set up an office in the GTA instead...:censor: that... keep Ontario working!

Still cheaper than the $677.40 Honda Canada makes you void of just for simple fog lights.

Honda of America charges half...  which is still pricey.

I get what you're saying.  And agree.  But let's say if someone in Wing's place was making, say, $20 an hour, he'd have to work 18+ extra hours to make up the difference in cost from US to Canada.  That's the way I look at...and 18 hours of work pay for one part is excessive...

Buying Canadian makes sense but how does it make sense in this case?  The parts are sourced by Honda of Japan.  They are shipped to north america and built all in the same place be it US, Canada, Japan, Taiwan where ever they make the parts.  Honda Canada then takes 1 box of parts off the boat.  Honda US takes a box off the boat.  Honda US then charged $100 for a part and Honda Canada charges $500 for the same part.

That's just silly.

I'm not ordering them, but was also looking at oil-jet bolts.  You need four of them on my engine.  Honda USA $11.  Honda Canada $40.  COME ON!  It's a tiny little bolt.  Heck $11 is too much but you can swallow it if you need it, $44 for the set of 4.  But $160 for the same 4 little bolts in Canada.  Ridiculous.

Canadian registered aircraft have been taking flights across the border for years and signaling engine trouble Mayday, Mayday, Mayday not just to put down safely on US soil, but to put down safely and have the engines O/H on US soil for cheap. Once fixed, fly them back home.

The only way we will ever see American pricing is to lower unit costs by removing the political boundary, shut down Canadian offices and major distribution centres and turn these functions over to the Americans.

Not quite the only way.

We could gain another 100,000,000 people and have a big enough market to be taken seriously.

or I suppose  we could become the next 10 US states which is quite similar to your  argument.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Yes, but I prefer the persons/hectare ratio we have now and will pay extra to keep it that way. The last thing I want is to become part of the US.

What I do find interesting is that some 'manufactuers/dealers' have brought their pricing down in Canada. I can now buy MSR tents here in Canada cheaper than I can in the USA. Some electronics are near equal pricing which is also a good thing.

::)  The costs of doing business are higher in Canada than the US, but that's not the reason for the kind of price differential we've seen.  The reason is greed on the part of suppliers, pure and simple.

At the end of the day this is all about distributor greed in Canada.  Thanks to restrictive distribution agreements Canadian distributors have had an easy captive market to gouge for decades and are happy to do so.  If anything, I feel sorry for retailers in all of this because they're the ones to get the customer grief but have little room to move as long as the distributors keep screwing everyone over.

::)  When you're willing to actually discuss things instead of running around crying "buy from Canadian sources only or the sky is falling" then we can talk economics.

BTW, welcome back Rob.  :)

Stuff that I've priced recently over the Internet (tires and rims) are not such great bargains when shipping and taxes are factored in. I don't mind paying a little extra (10 or 20%) to buy locally.

But when it's 500%, then I say 'Hey, let's buy American.'

Still, charging 'what the market will bear' is a time honoured pillar of capitalism. Nothing wrong with that. I even use it myself when dealing with my employer.  ;D
Just put the steering wheel in the DOWN position and the drive feels much better - watz up with that??
