Your opinions on the Audi Q7
« on: April 08, 2008, 03:16:50 pm »
I've been searching for an SUV to purchase sometime in the near future and I've come to the conclusion that it needed to be sporty, large, fuel efficient (if I go with the diesel coming out soon) and luxury oriented.
I was mainly looking at the V6 model or the upcoming diesel engines.

What do u guys think, and should I wait for the diesel?

Totally depends on the price premium of the diesel vs. the 3.2. I assume you are leasing so the rates may be jacked up on the TDI.
Everything in life is relative.

I would wait for the diesel. Of course it depends on the price differential too, but I predict that the value of a diesel Q7 will be much better.

I'm not sure how sporty the 3.2L Q7 is (not too sporty IIRC from the reviews I read). Have you looked at the X5? Most auto journalists would tell you what you most likely know already (you have a BMW) that the BMW is the ultimate driving machine. Fuel efficiency is not one of the Q7's strengths either; therefore you may need to wait for the diesel version.

Edmunds.com has one in their long-term fleet; maybe you can browse through that blog too for more opinions.

The Q7 diesel is supposed to be out by what, Dec-Feb time frame? From what I'm hearing Audi thinks they can price it at a significant price premium to the 3.6L. I think they're wrong if they want any volume, but right now Audi's not concerned too much with volume since their models are selling well overseas and the Dollar-Euro exchange (the Touareg/Q7/Cayenne are made in Europe whereas the X5/ML/R/GL aren't) doesn't make a good business case for selling more units for less money here. Other than fuel economy and it being a tad space inefficient, think the Q7 is an excellent machine.

The Benz CDI/BLUETECs are priced barely higher than their base gas, and in some cases are the base engine. Now that's a high value strategy. Maybe it's not so sporty, but the R CDI is pretty darned large and efficient for its size.

The BMW X5 diesel may be better suited and plenty sportier, but don't know how large you need? It'll be one to look out for.

My mom is currently negotiating on a new Q7 3.6.  They are very thirsty vehicles.  She's coming from a Cayenne but still expects to pay more for gas with the Q7, however, the diesel variety should be a better option.  It certainly is large, in fact, it won't fit into our garage as it is currently construted so we will have to have some shelving moved, as a point of reference, the Cayenne fit in with no problem.

I like the Q7, it's not sporty at all, but I think it is a classy, stylish suv.  I would not consider the X5, I don't think you get what you pay for with it, and I find the interior to be very blah - my boss has one and is not overly thrilled with it (electronics suck).

I was looking at the Q7 because it just looks sporty even if its not, and with the diesel it would be the perfect compromise.  I don't want a gas guzzler, but not interested in the small s\cuv's.
I do like the X5, but it might actually be more expensive than the audi, and it's smaller inside.  If they price the diesel X5 properly than it might be worth it, especially with the 4 yr free maintenance plan.

If they price the Q7 diesel similar to the V6 than I'll seriously consider it...however Audi has not mentioned anything on diesel $$$

Thanks for your comments.

The fuel consumption 3.6 FSI vs. 3.0 TDI is 18.1 vs. 12.9 l/100 km in the city. For anyone interested in the spec comparison between the two models, here's is a link to the Audi Germany web site.

I would definitely go diesel..

The Q7s are becomming common in Vancouver.  But the last one I saw had a broken fog light, so they might be a bit vulnerable.

Have you looked at the Mercedes GL320 CDI?

I have looked at them, however not closely....I was turned off by past negative dealership experiences and my cousin works as a mechanic at mercedes and he was telling me to stay away from them. ( the gas versions).

Running away from the Mercedes to the Audi for reliability? Yikes. ;D

I'm still :rofl2: at having sporty, large and fuel efficient in the same sentence.

If you want the best gas mileage I think your only option will be the diesel which means Q7. Still very far from fuel efficient.

A subwoofer should only be noticed once it has been turned off.

Since the Q7 has probably the lowest mileage compared to X5/ML/R/GL in gas form, think the same will be true for the diesel as well. Eagerly awaiting the numbers.
