Might buy a Hyundai Accent Hatch Sport
« on: March 30, 2008, 06:55:32 pm »
We run 2 cars and I am considering buying an Accent hatchback for our 2nd car. I can get the sport model with automatic for $17,000 on the road including all fees & taxes. Includes sunroof, 16 inch alloys and sportier suspension bits. This is thanks to a $3600 price drop in Quebec for a limited time.

I want a hatch back and the price is great. I like Hyundia's and my friends have had great experiance with their Elantras. I think the car looks very sharp and the fact that it is a 2 door is not a big concern as we have another car for hauling more than 2 people. From what I read it has a pretty good ride and is quite quiet.

Read a lot about it. Disappointed that hatch does not have ABS or side airbags.

Another concern is reports of poor fuel economy. Some owners seem to complain of getting really bad fuel economy. I was wondering if these are isolated cases or does this car do poorly in that department. I suspect Korean cars in general fall a little behind in gas mileage.

Might go for a test drive tomorrow. Any comment are welcome.

Living my BMW dream.

What is in the sport package that you REALLY need that is worth the extra $5000 or so?  The $10k one sounds excellent IMO.

The sport package is etras added to the better equipped GL version of the Accent.

The base Accent for $10,000 is the L with standard tranny.

When you move up to GL you get AC, Power windows, keyless entry & power mirrors.

Another $1000 for Auto Transmission.

Another $1000 (or so) for sport package (Alloys, Sunroof, fog lights, Leather steering wheel and 2 more speakers).

Add PDI .... reduce total by $3600 and add taxes and it comes to $17,000.

I signed the agreement for a 2008 sport auto (Onyx Blue), a week and a half ago. I'm a little disappointed that it hasn't been delivered yet, but anyway...

Basically all the reviews that I have seen regarding the 2008 Accent are for the sport model.

17k all in? Man, that sounds like a wicked deal. I assume you're paying cash (ergo the $3600 dollar deal). Mine was like 23k all in with financing after turning in my lease. Keep in mind though that my lease turn in (2003 Accent) had a couple thousand in damage and they covered the remaining 2 lease payments.

All the reviews are positive online. I'm looking forward to the car.

Just for fun I went to USA web site to check price of Accent down there. With $3600 discount I am getting the prices are comparable.

What is shocking is that the GL sport version of the hatchback (called as SE down there) gets all this safety equipment: Side airbags. Curtain airbags. ABS. Electronic breake force distribution. Tire pressure monitoring.

The CDN hatch get only 2 front airbags and does not even have this other stuff available as an option. It is amazing how they treat the CDN market so differently from that of the land or the Red White & Blue.

I kind of pissed off about this...... But not pissed off to do a cross border purchase. Just pissed off!

Even with the side airbags the Accent does poorly in crash tests, as you can watch here:

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/safety-recalls/carcrashtest/crashtestvideo.htm

Maybe without the side airbags it wouldn't pass safety standards at all in the U.S?
