03 Honda civic noisy only when making hard right trun.
« on: March 15, 2008, 10:19:33 pm »
Hi,
My 03 Honda civic 92,000kms, is noisy from the buttom, only when I make a hard right turn @ 30-40kms/h. The nose is somthing like scratching. I look at the buttom, but did not see anything.  The noise is still there even if I do not brake when making the hard right turn, I changed the front brakes when it was 80,000kms.
So what is the problem?

Most likely it is your left side wheel bearings.  When you turn right you shift the car's weight to the left, and that added stress makes the damaged bearing start grinding.

If its a wheel bearing you should be hearing a constant hum type of noise which will be audible when all your appliances are turned off. Heater and radio basically to hear the sound. If not then I might suspect the bearings on the RF drive axle which can whine or make a ginding noise when turned to a full right on a turn. Is the power stering full as well as it can radiate sounds from it as well when stressed to one side. The vane inside of it will make a screeching noise if low on fluid. I replaced a RR wheel bearing on my one Caddi a few weeks ago and it had a full time rumble type of Hum to it which was getting very noticable but for a 1991 car I kinda of expect things like this to start going.  :)

I did turn off the radio and heat. The noisy is still there, from the bottom under the rear back seat. I changed the front wheel bearing for my Ford Contour when it was 170,000kms. But the Civic is only 92,000kms, will the wheel bearing easy to be broken that fast? Will it be something else? Thanks. ???

I suspect its the wheel bearing for it to be a constant noise which is certainly not normal for this or any other make of car. There is no set time length for any wheel bearing to last or let go as even a bad bump can start the process of it breaking down. If the noise is getting louder get it in for a good look at asap and hopefully the waranty is still in effect to cover the cost of this repair.  You can verify this by driving in a straight line and when you try to throw the car left and then right back and forth the noise should get louder on that side. If so its the wheel bearing for sure.   :)

Could be the front struts.  OEM were poor in that generation.

Also check the axle/cv boots both sides.  On my 1989 Honda CRX Si (http://crx.unixlover.com), when one my cv boot ripped and the cv joint started getting dry, I heard a sound similar to the one described only when turning the wheel to the right.  Pretty easy to check.

You can do a quick visual inspection for cracks and tears on *both* the inner and outer ends of the shaft.  If the vehicle is parked, (engine off, on a level surface, with the e-brake on and in gear for safety) you can squeeze underneath and take a look with a flashlight.  A better check would be to (same basic safety instructions) jack each corner up and take a look...making sure that you can see all the way around the rubber boot.

Hi,
Guys. Finally, I bring my car to Honda dealer. They check the stunk, driveaxle, cv boots, bearings. Nothing wrong. They found the rear drum build up rust, it is the rust that making noise when I made a right turn. So,  checking feed is $105, cleaned up rust, drum grinding is $160, lube is $10, total is $275+tax. Now, my car is running normal. So, how do you guys think? Can the rust make that worse? ???

Yes if it was on the outside lip of the rear drum. It just rubs and makes the noise you heard. Not that usual but does happen on occasion I have heard in the trade.  :)
