"steeper" windshield... don't you mean less steep?
« on: March 14, 2008, 04:37:28 pm »
This is something I have noticed in a number of articles...

As the angle made between the windshield and the driver's window sill decreases, does not the windshield become less steep?  Why do so many call a "more aerodynamically efficient"-type windshield more steep?

More angled = more steeply raked to me. I wouldn't say it needs to relate to the hood, just the glass itself and the degree angled.

All I can think of is the Tim Horton's commerical - "steeped".

Sivic is right though, if you use the ground as reference the windshield is less steep, as vertical would be the most steep....

Yeah, you two are confusing me!  ???  haha, easily done.

Well traditionally think of windshields as normal upright (Model T, Jeeps). Any departure from that is angled, the more angled from that 'normal' the more steep? I know 'steep' is normally thought of as more upright, but the opposite may be true here? Usually see the term 'steeply raked' back. I dunno, just speculating and rambling now  :-X...

My dictionary defines "steep" as

Quote
rising or falling sharply; nearly perpendicular

If you use the front of the car as a reference point, then it makes sense.  I've no idea what automakers use as their reference, but apparently the reviewers are using the front...?

Maybe sweep-back might be a better description for the windshield instead of steep.  More steep is more vertical such as the car was falling off a steep cliff.

I think, as SirA pointed out, the correct modified word is "rake" rather than windshield.  Anyway, steeply raked windshield may make a car more slippery, but it makes wiping its inside surface clean more difficult. New Civic owners any comment?

I don't think the use of the verb rake changes the implication of steep.

Anyway, the glass in front of me towers up almost two metres and thanks to good wiper blades, opposable wiping, rain-x, and a microfibre wipe inside - vision couldn't be clearer.

With these new, er, "un-steeper" windshields, I find I have to wipe from the bottom up so my knuckles don't make prints all over the glass when I'm wiping downwards.

Sir A's right, it's correct if you think of how different it is from vertical, rather than from horizontal.  But I think the problem is that someone has taken a relatively logical phrase, "steeply raked," and shortened it to "steep" so it means nothing at all.  "Slanted" would work.

But a lot of these idiocies make it into common usage despite being illogical.  Try this one:  "transparent" decision-making processes that they are always promising in governments and so on.  "Transparent" means something is essentially invisible.  The word they want is "visible."

My dad's pet peeve is "warm temperatures."  Temperatures are either high or low, but they aren't warm or cold.

Anyway, the glass in front of me towers up almost two metres and thanks to good wiper blades, opposable wiping, rain-x, and a microfibre wipe inside - vision couldn't be clearer.

Umm... "What is a bus?"
