Nexen tires - what's the deal?
« on: March 13, 2008, 07:29:24 pm »
I'm looking for new tires for my Accent. Since I'll be keeping the snow tires on for probably another month, I'm in no hurry and I've done quite a bit of research on a new set. I was in a Goodyear store the other day and they had a set of Nexen CP 641 tires - http://www.nexentireusa.com/tire_detail.asp?pid=105. They look good, and are pretty much the kind of tire I'm looking for, but I've never heard of Nexen before. Plus when I searched for those tires online I came up with almost nothing. Quite a bit about other Nexen tires being good for the price, but nothing on the CP 641.

Anyone have experience with them? I'm looking for a fairly performance-oriented tire (P185 60 R14 82H) that's quiet and grips well in the rain. I don't care about snow traction, that's what snow tires are for. Some others I'm considering:

Bridgestone Potenza G009
Kumho Solus KH16
General Tire Altimax HP

I bought a set of Nexen N5000s for my Grand Prix and they were easily the worst tires I ever had.  The price is great, but you get what you pay for.  Less than a year after I bought them, I had to get them replaced.

I recently got a set of Nexen N3000 W rated tires and they are great.  Like I have found with Michelin for example, quality differs greatly between lines, so all Nexens may not be created equal.

Out of your list there, I would personally go with the Kumho Solus KH16.  I haven't heard much about Nexen either, I don't care for General (due to mediocre performance on one of their models, but to be fair, it was an OE tire), and I find Bridgestone to often be overpriced relative to other tires offering the same or similar performance levels.

I once had a set of Kumho winter tires - the KW11, and it was a great tire.  I bought it for ice and light to moderate snow, while making sure it was very capable of dry and wet conditions (for the Vancouver/Fraser Valley area) and I was very pleased with it.  I found I actually preferred driving with them instead of the Bridgestone RE92 OEM tires during the summer.  I have no doubts on the quality of Kumho.
Suck, squeeze, bang, blow - who wouldn't love the internal combustion engine?  ;D

Is General made by Continental or vice versa?

My all seasons were done, figured it would be good to put snows on this late in the season, liked the Nexen for summer, found that Walmart now sells Nexen - got the winters yesterday for $56/tire, installed and taxes came to $300 on the nose.  Surprisingly quiet for a winter tire!

Walmart purchased Nexen tires?  I reckon the so-called brand name tires at Walmart are inferior to the brand name tires purchased at a proper tire shop.  Brand name tires sold at Crappy Tire are made to CT's specs and price point, IIRC.

Nexen are a Korean name brand tire, and have an excellent world wide reputation.  They just haven't been marketed in North America as long as, say, Goodyear or BFG, or Michelin, or......
Same goes for Kumho and Hankook.
I put N7000 summers on last season and was very impressed compared to the Yokohama's they replaced at hlaf the price.

A few cars a go I bought some of CTC's Predator tires, put over 100k on them with no issues at all, I believe it was a rebadged Uniroyl tire.
Agreed, CTC's cheapie tire are exactly that, cheap.
The local used tire place was quoting me $50/tire installed and balanced, but no warranty at all.
For $56 (plus $10 balancing) with a warranty, the Nexens at Walmart made more sense.

Nexens sold at Walmart are the same exact tire sold thru Goodyear and other independent dealers.

Currently nothing can match their cost/quality.  I'm sure their prices will increase some day.  :P

In Walmart, I  find they sell  Nexen and Dunlop GS-2 winter tire, can't find any useful info from internet about Nexen( made in Korea), they are now proberbly the cheapest winter tire on the market (cheaper than CT nordic), while Dunlop GS-2 is the top pick from APA, for 205/55/16

Nexen: $86+10balancing+$3environment tax=$99
Dunlop :112+13=$125

Is Dunlop worth $100 for 4 tires? I know michilin x-ice 2 in costco ($192) is a really rip off.
