Topic: Car inspection services?

I'm considering buying a used US vehicle.  Has anyone had any experiences with any of the car inspection services such as CarChex or SGS?  It seems like they really don't do all that much as part of their inspections, but it would be otherwise tricky to find a trustable "real" mechanic in the US to take a look at a car.

^^How much??  Otherwise, it might be better to go to the dealer.  Most dealers can do a pre-purchase inspection..the same one they use for Certified Pre-Owned vehicles...
