Later this year the company will also introduce a 6.0-litre V12 TDI that makes an astounding 500 hp and 737 lb/ft torque. In the Q7, the engine is expected to return a combined city/highway average of 11.8 L/100 km, while generating 0-100 km/h times of 5.3 seconds.

Now that is one sweet, sweet engine. This is a version of the LeMans R10 TDI motor yes?

However, the more humble 3.0-litre TDI itself produces a 0-100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds in the A5 Coupe, where the engine's light weight (226 kilograms) also contributes to excellent vehicle balance, according to Audi engineers. This car consumes fuel at a combined average of 6.4 L/100 km.

That's even better than above.

So, next to the ML320CDI and Grand Cherokee CDI, there are now three new SUVs available in NA with diesels?

The touareg/cayenne gunna follow soon too?

The first one we'll see is the diesel-powered Audi Q7 SUV. It debuts here in the first quarter of 2009, followed by the A4 TDI sedan

Bring me the Avant please!

How is it possible that after electricity has traveled through hundreds of miles of power line then hundreds of feet (or yards) of romex in our home, that changing the last three feet of wire with something exotic, expensive (cool looking, and packaged in a pricey box) is going to make a difference?

Would this be the same engine as in the MB E320 Bluetec?

No.  Different engines entirely.

And so it begins.  Mid-sized SUVs with clean diesel engines returning better than 10L/100km.

This is exactly what we're waiting for, for our next family vehicle.  Audi has their Q7, so can the Toureg be far behind?  VW/Audi have obviously been leaders in diesel engines for years, but I'm hoping for more selection in 2-3 years.

The Touareg 3.0 TDI should come before the Q7 - towards the end of the year.

Mercedes will have the new GL,R, and M diesels sometime around the fall and the E sedan in 2009.
