2005 Acura TL rear tire wear
« on: February 20, 2008, 09:13:36 pm »
Bought car brand new, it wears out both back tires in 15,000 Km. Now on 4th set, Honda says not their problem as dealer has found nothing on 3 wheel alignment checks and are basically telling me to go away. Have been told numerous times by Dealer and Acura I  should only expect to get this performance....  Front tires will last 60,000 Km +, and car is a front wheel drive. When tires worn down rear of car jumps around like a jack rabbit when driving our Saskatchewan highways. Any advice on a fix besides taking Honda to arbitration?
Front and back tires are identical Michellins, Pilot HXMXM4 93W

I have an 05 TL as well and I have not had this problem. I recently replaced the original Michelins at 39K, but the wear was even on all 4. I do rotate and balance the tires twice a year and align once a year though.

How do the rear tires wear out? Inside or outsides only? Could be the factory spec for toe in/out for better handling.

You should also rotate your tires every 10K (or less) to help prevent/reduce this.

Also, maybe go to a good independent shop for an alignment?

Sounds like an alignment problem. I would definitely go with the 3rd party advice and get an outside opinion. Rotating more will help, but you shouldn't be wearing out tires in 15K.

Rotated the tires on second set and it just wrecked the good front ones once they were on the back! Have had a 3rd party align wheels  and found it within Honda specs. They adjusted more to 0 on camber and toe rather than running the negative srill within Honda's specs
How  do they wear, at 4,363 Km of use, Tread depths of new tire ~ .295", Passenger  rear o/s=.241, center .246, I/S=.249, Driver rear o/s=.240, center=.243, O/S=.223. The math says worn out at 13,500 at worse, 20,600 at best. Worn out occurs with 1/16' left or about .0625"

Just a thought Allen, if you wore out a complete set of tires in 40 K, you pretty much have the same problem as I do. If you rotate them enough, you are wearing out all 4 on th back end.... I have had a number of vehicles in my time and 80k is easily the norm for me and most of them would have made 100K if I wanted to push them ... Astro van with BFgoodrich, Goodyear, and "$100" tires gave this kind of performance. Rather disappointing $53,707 car with $300+ tires can only do 15,000 Km, or even 40K in your case... just a thought

The tires were not worn out, still a fair amont of tread, I probaly could have run another 10K, but I don't use winter tires and wanted fresh rubber for the winter.

One thing you need to accept with any performance tire is that you will not get big milaage out of them. if you want performance, then you have to sacrafice wear..

If the cost of tires is an issue you should get into a less perfomance oriented vechile that can run tires with higher wear ratings

Just curious what type /make of tire did you go to? Cost of tires is not an issue when they perform reasonably. I didn't consider the TL to be a "performance car" .It gets driven straight down the road like all the  rest I have had and there are lots of cars with 250+Hp.

Wornout,  its not the HP, but the softer compound in a more performance rated tire, they just plain wearout faster..

I put a set of Toyo Versado LX's on as replacements

Thanks for info. I will check these out.   So far the Dealer and Honda have covered the cost of 7 of the 8 new tires put on this vehicle, but lets just say this has not been done without numerous discussions (and I would love to spend my time doing more productive things!).... They  have repeatedly put on the same make/style tires and have never suggested we try any different  ones.

You are definitely not going to get 100K on this type of tire. If you got 40 to 50 then that would be normal. If you get 40K from them I would say you have done reasonably well. It is a preformance tire. If front tires are lasting 60K then rotation should get you in the range of reasonable tread life. Rotating the backs to the front isnt really wrecking them it is spreading out the wear over the full set of tires instead of just the 2.

If you want better longevity consider something that has a higher treadwear rating.
