Except people won't want the 175hp, they will want the A/C or Cruise that only comes with the 175hp and a huge price jump
Huh? What's wrong with the Mazda3's reliability.
I also can't tell if you're being facetious about hatches not selling in Canada. Hatches do sell quite well here actually. They don't sell that well in the US.

Not sure about A/C. But my point was that they will bundle the 2.3 with things like sunroof, cruise etc -- so you need to get it to get certain features.
Fuel economy is better in the 2.0, but only slightly. Overall, the Mazda3's with the 2.0 engine tend to be lighter weight, mostly because the engine is lighter and the 2.0 is more common in the sedan. So the fuel economy is due to more than just engine displacement.
The 2.0L was not available in the hatch at all. That will change when the 2008.5 models start arriving shortly. The hatch is indeed 100-200lbs heavier than the sedan.
