The interest rate is going up to 1.9% on the 2008.5 models.  I believe the pricing is staying the same.

From the Globe and Mail...

A new base model of the popular Mazda3 hatchback — the closest competitor to the Honda Civic for the title of best-selling car in the country the last few years — will arrive by the end of the month.

Mazda executives insist Mazda3 sales have been constrained more by the number allocated to Canada than anything else, so the new 2008.5 Mazda3 Sport GX hatchback may just give the company the sales boost it needs to make it a closer horse race in 2008.

Bringing a stripped version of the hatchback to market may not sound like an overly ambitious plan, but to do so, Mazda has created a unique North American model: a Mazda3 Sport hatchback with the 2.0-litre engine from the sedan.

Importantly, it lowers the price of a base hatchback to $17,895 from the current $21,095. A price chop of more than $3,000 is a rarity in any class, much less one in this segment. The new base price is a premium of only a thousand dollars over the Mazda3 GX sedan.

You can't call the Mazda3 Sport GX a Canada-only model, even though this car isn't offered with this engine in the U.S., because essentially the same car and engine are offered in Europe.

Its 148 horsepower is only eight ponies down from the larger 2.3-litre engine that's been standard in North American Mazda3 hatchbacks since it replaced the Protegé for 2004.

The smaller engine is considerably better on fuel than the 2.3, which combined with the lower starting price should be a major bonus for shoppers in this price-conscious class.

It won't get close to the sparkling fuel economy numbers of any four-door Civic, but Honda doesn't offer a hatchback Civic model at all, two or four doors, despite the major sales generated by the Mazda3, Dodge Caliber and Toyota Matrix.

Good but not enough.
From my experience, 80% of the customers focus on the vehicle price first THEN the interest rate.

Customer: What? $2000 more than a Corolla? Bye bye.
Sales: But interest rate is (customer gone/not listening anymore) ...... lower.

Toyota's new pricing strategy will put enough pressure on other manufacturers to lower MSRPs.
Mazda included.

Details on the 2008.5 changes (this is from back in November):

As recently announced, beginning January 2008 production we will be introducing the 2008.5 Mazda3. There are a number of additions that will further strengthen our Mazda3 line-up moving into 2008. The details are as follows…

2008.5 Mazda3 Sport GX 2.0L
The 2008.5 line-up will showcase a Mazda3 Sport GX model. This 2.0L Sport model will be unique to Canada in the North America market. The starting price is expected to be $17,895.
As for equipment, the following features will be included on the Mazda3 Sport GX:
o Current Mazda3 sedan 2.0L engine
o 15” steel wheels
o ABS with EBFD
o 4 wheel disc brakes
o Body coloured grille, GFX front and rear bumpers (no side sills)
o Sporty fog lamps
o Mud flaps
o Side air bag and air curtains
o AM/FM CD with 4 speakers
o And much more
The Mazda3 Sport GX will also have an available Comfort Package. Some of the key package features are power locks/windows, power heated mirrors, keyless entry, illuminated entry, steering wheel mounted audio controls, spoiler and 15” alloy wheels.
Preliminary Pricing of this package is $1,295 MSRP. Other available options on this model are automatic transmission and air conditioning.

2008.5 Mazda3 Sport GS
We are pleased to advise that the Mazda3 Sport GS will receive a standard rear spoiler, steering wheel mounted cruise control and 2 additional speakers (6 vs. 4 speakers). We do not expect pricing changes due to these GS model enhancements. However, in an effort to reduce complexity all GS Sport models will receive standard air conditioning for an MSRP price increase of $1,000.

2008.5 Mazda3 Sport GT
For 2008.5 the Mazda3 Sport GT will receive standard xenon headlamps. Once again, we do not expect any pricing changes due to this addition. The GT Luxury Package which currently includes leather seating, in-dash 6 CD Changer and automatic climate control also receives power driver’s seat, Bose audio with an additional speaker and Sirius satellite radio for a package price of $1,895.

2008.5 Mazda3 GX
The Mazda3 sedan receives refreshened equipment content as well for 2008.5. We are pleased to inform you that the GX model is improved with an additional 2 speakers (4 vs. 2 speakers) and body coloured mirrors. Once again, Mazda Canada expects to implement this equipment with no price increase. Similar to the Sport model, the GX sedan will also have a Comfort Package available instead of 2008’s Power Package. The new package includes power locks/windows, power heated mirrors, keyless entry, illuminated entry, steering wheel mounted audio controls, 15” alloy wheels and more for an MSRP of $995.

2008.5 Mazda3 GS
Equally improved, the GS sedan will receive body coloured grille and standard 16” alloy wheels with no expected price increase. To accommodate this change, the current GS Sport Package (moonroof and 16” alloy wheels) will no longer be available. Instead, GS models will have stand alone moonroof available as an option for an MSRP of $800.

2008.5 Mazda3 GT
Similar to the Mazda3 Sport GT, the GT sedan also receives xenon headlamps with no expected price increase. The sedan’s GT Luxury Package (leather seating, in-dash 6 CD Changer and automatic climate control) adds equipment such as power driver’s seat, Bose audio with an additional speaker and Sirius satellite radio at a $400 price increase totaling an MSRP of $1,895.

Wow!  A loaded 2.0L Mazda3 for $16,595 is an incredible value!

It won't get close to the sparkling fuel economy numbers of any four-door Civic, but Honda doesn't offer a hatchback Civic model at all, two or four doors.

But that such a non issue here in CanadaLand. Hatches never sell well here. :)

Huh?  What's wrong with the Mazda3's reliability.  As far as I can figure, it's one of the more reliable cars out there.

I also can't tell if you're being facetious about hatches not selling in Canada.  Hatches do sell quite well here actually.  They don't sell that well in the US.

I heard a 'rumor' that the 2.3L will become a 2.5L with 175-180 hp.

Nice and all but why?  There's a Mazdaspeed 3 if you want the power, just keep it simple and cheap and do only the 2.0L 8hp isn't worth the 2.3 either anymore.

Because people want more  ;)

I think that people will see that the 8hp isn't worth the upgrade so Mazda will make the gap larger. I think its good, 150hp, 175hp, 240hp....something for everybody.

The 2.3 L motor is more than just a little more HP.  It's smoother and a little more refined.  The 2.0 does NOT have variable valve timing, whereas the 2.3 DOES.

Fuel economy is better in the 2.0, but only slightly.  Overall, the Mazda3's with the 2.0 engine tend to be lighter weight, mostly because the engine is lighter and the 2.0 is more common in the sedan.  So the fuel economy is due to more than just engine displacement.

Quote
I heard a 'rumor' that the 2.3L will become a 2.5L with 175-180 hp.

Yes that's true.  Also, Mazda is changing ALL their engines to be direct injection, including the new 2.5L.  The 2.3L DISI found in the Mazdaspeed3 and CX7 is/was a test bed for DISI engineering.
