a friend of mine who is a car buff has recommended the nokian  WR all weather tire.... locally the cost is $340 a tire...

curious to know if the tire gurus who frequent this site recommend another tire and/or can find me a better price....

I had these on my past Volvo XC90 and they were excellent summer or winter. I paid about $220.00 a piece installed for 235-65R17. Your's look awfully expensives, what size?

I have the Nokian WR G2 on 2007 Toyota Camry LE. 215/60/16. $147 per tire.

Have been pretty good for the kind of driving we do in Toronto and around. Its midway between proper dedicated winter tire and good all seasons.

Seems a shame to put a compromise "all weather" tire on something sporty like a 330Ci, but if you can't or won't go with separate summer and winter tires, then I guess the Nokian is your only halfway decent option.

My cousin has them on his 330xi (as well as all the others in his stable) and has no complaints.

I had comprimises I'd go  with a good winter tire and good summer tire.  If you had an xi you might be fine with a compromise but a RWD coupe, I'd get a dedicated winter.

My brother's 323 spun out today at 10 km/h around an apartment complex on dedicated winter tires when he hit some ice. So i'd suggest you get good winter tires. He was afraid of not having a spare so he went with run flat winter tires which are all "high performance" types. Not as good as tires with lower speed ratings but better grip in winter conditions.

I've got WR's on my wifes Odyssey.  Perhaps not as good in the deep stuff as a dedicated winter, but very predictable in pretty much everything.  My beef with them  is the our set was very difficult to balance and we find they deliver a rather harsh ride (compared to the OE tires on the van).
Internal combustion thrust I trust

I have a brand new set of WRs on my Mazda3. I found them just fine in the Toronto winter this year. I took the car out on purpose after snow falls and I haven’t had any problems with them. I don't know how they would do on ice though.
However, I agree with those suggesting proper summer/winter tires on a RWD car like yours. I think the WRs would affect the driving experience in the summer and it would be shame with such a car.

:iagree: I wouldn't want to drive with these in summer but I will have to.

We've been very happy for the first six months (or so) of life of WR's on our XC70.  We live in North Vancouver, so this is hardly deep snow, but they've been good in the ice/rain/slush and the couple of times we've had 6 inches or so (at the top of the hill).  These replaced faux SUV tires, so rough ride and squishy handling in the summer is to be expected and fine in a jacked-up baby mobile.  Ours were approx. $175 a corner and they are an SUV size (with XL rating for load).

On my 328 I used to run winters and summers.  The WR's would suck the life out of a RWD bimmer.  I would do my best to get two sets of tires.  If you feel you must go all season these are the only tires good in the actual winter (not that southern california winter A/S tires seem to be made for) but not the best for summer, or you go to the performance all-season tires that are decent in the summer, and absolutely hopeless in the winter.

I just put WRs (not the G2) on my Wrx before the snows...absolutely no complaints...on a rough car like the REX, there is very little compromise to speak of...very very slight squishiness compared to the stock W-rated Potenzas.

Size is 215/45VR17, $220 each...still a blast going (real) fast. They are not supposed to last that long, maybe a couple of years. They are no worse in the snow than any 'dedicated' winters that are performance orientated.

I also have WRs on the Sienna, second winter now, noticeably noisier than the OEM and some occasional vibrations, the van handles better though because the WR is R-rated. They wear fast as well, I think maybe good for 50,000km (?guaranteed for 100,000).
First year use was was as good as other dedicated winter tires, second year use is like used winter tires LOL! Still much better than 'No seasons'.

The only instance I would consider dedicated sets would be if I'm starting with new stock/summer tires, but I would probably be getting dedicated rims for the winter tires...

The stock Potenzas are consider really out dated tires now. So differences between the WR and them might not be so much. Between the WR and the new generations of good performance tires might be great.

I don't know if all Potenza are the same but the W-rated stock ones on the Wrx seems to hold together pretty well...I have to agree the old one I had on my Legacy is fairly crappy (205/60R15)...but still no worse than other stock tires of other cars I had.

I don't feel the stock Potenza 215/45WR17 is undermatching the Wrx...nor is the WR (maybe a little on the WR because it may well be squishier in the summer)

Well for our warm winters out west, I'm considering going WR's in the winter and performance in the summer...

Is it true that the WR's will last longer than regular winters?

Nokian WRs should last as long as 'Performance Winter Tires' thats what these are IMO.

Nokian WR G2 UTQG Rating is 400 A/A. These ratings are not reported for winter tires.

FROM WHAT I SEEN SO FAR FROM NOKIAN, SEEMS LIKE A OVERPRICED NO NAME TIRE.  WHEN I SEE NASCAR, FORMULA ONE, NHRA OR ANY OTHER FORM OF RACING, SPORTING NOKIAN'S ON THEIR CARS, THEN I'LL KNOW THEY ARE DOING WELL AS A PERFORMANCE TIRE.  THEY ALREADY HAVE THE PREMIUM PRICES DOWN PAT, BUT THAT'S ABOUT ALL.  I'LL STICK WITH MY DUNLOPS AND GOODYEARS THANKS. LOL

Just to let you know, Nokian is a company that specializes and is well known for their winter tires.

Since when do Nascar, Formula One, and NHRA use winter tires?  ::)
