my g/f just bought a 2008 vw rabbit on saturday, it was kind of rushed though because they had 2 offers that were ending today, first one being $750 off for the grad program, and the second one being an extra 1% off the lease rates for being an existing vw customer.

she picked up a 2008 4 dr auto with sunroof, cold weather and comfortline packages.

lease rate of 2.9% for 48 months
$1000 down

and she's paying $335 per month with taxes.
residual is $13180

what do you guys think?

how negotiable are the "admin fees" ?

the grad program $750 should be calculated before we look at other discounts right?  it doesn't come off the dealer's profit, I'm assuming vw takes the hit?

The deal is done - no sense worrying about it now.

The grad rebate does not come off the dealers profit.

Like Dorin said, relax and enjoy the great new ride. Post pics if you can.

Hey guys,

My time has come to buy the car. I subscribed to CarCostCanada.com and got a report for the 08 VW Rabbit 4dr, the report contains the following info:

Base

Retail Price* $20,975.00
Wholesale Price**$19,707.00
Freight

Retail $1,335.00
Wholesale $1,335.00

Optional equipment selected

-
FEDERAL AIR CONDITIONING EXCISE TAX (-EXTAX)
Retail $100.00
Wholesale $100.00
-
COMFORTLINE PKG -inc: 16" alloy wheels, 6-disc in-dash CD changer, diversity antenna, front/rear floormats (WPR)
Retail $975.00
Wholesale $856.00
-
COLD WEATHER PKG -inc: heated front seats, heated windshield washer nozzles (PCW)
Retail $275.00
Wholesale $241.00

Totals including all items above

Retail $23,660.00
Wholesale $22,239.00

I am interested in the financing option and based on the report, VW is offering 2.9% for 60 and 66 months.

What do you guys think is the right on the road price for the car?
Based on my conversation with one of the VW sales people he was mentioning a non-negotiable Admin fee of 499$, a charge that isn't making much sense to me.

Please shoot any advice and share your thoughts.

Thank you guys.

TT.

What ever you price is drop it by $499 and tell them it covers your non-negotiable Administion fee

I'd make an offer for:

Base Price: $19,707
Comfortline: $856
Cold Weather: $241
Invoice Price: $20,804
Dealer Profit: $ 500
Purchase price: $21,304

A/C Tax: $100
Freight: $1,335
Gas Tax: $75 (Estimate)
Admin Fee: $0 (see Dealer Profit)
Total: $22,814

Tax (13% Ontario): $2,965.82

Grand Total: $25,779.82

You may also need to pay for the licence plates, but you can check the amount on the Ministry web site.

If they say the Admin fee is non-negotiable, move the $500 amount to the Admin Fee line. The Admin fee is pure dealer profit.
I would go as high as $21,500 for the purchase price, but not more than that.
Write up the offer on one page and drop it off to as many dealers as you can and wait for them to call you back.

Is it worthwhile breaking down the price like that for them?  I'd say just give them the offer of $25,800 all-in (i.e. car price + all fees and taxes) and let them mull on that.  I'd then only negotiate that all-in price (they can name things whatever they want within that, as long as you don't pay more than the all-in price you agree to at the end of the day).

Depending on how you feel about it, getting the car for $26,500 or less all-in seems like a reasonable deal.

Is the 2008 model wholesale price or invoice price you guys listed above the same for the price 2009 model? I am planning to buy a 2009 model pretty soon. If the wholesale price is still accurate for 2009 model, I will just use your numbers to negotiate with dealer.

Thanks
