And the Fit is a Honda. Only Honda makes cars that you can depend on going 300,000 km plus. Even Toyota doesn't and the interior of the Yaris and the Corolla are plasticky and cheap looking.

A friend of mine has a Civic. It is almost a year old. It is perfect. It runs like a clock without squeaks bangs or rattles. Just a tick over 18K on the clock. There is only one thing he can find fault with -  it has a sharp gear change when changing from first to 2nd gear, when it very cold out, say -15-20 It does it only once when it is first started and driven cold. If  warmed up for about 5 minutes then it doesn't. Apart from that it is flawless. Grin

Why is it, when someone has Issue with an Import, do people think it must be the whole line-up. Thinker

They have sold 70,838 8th gen Civics in 2006 in Canada, there are bound to be some issues. It would be impossible for 70,838 Civics to be 100% perfect. Smiley

OMG, I'm not a fanboy. There are way too many cars I want. I don't want to limit myself just to a Honda.  I'm was just pointing out that all cars have faults. No one builds a perfect car. My next car is going to be an Astra. So I Hardly qualify as a fanboy.

Ummm and this coming from someone with a user name 2hondas. Thinker

Ah, but the way the poster gushes on about Hondas not only are they all 100% perfect but they cure cancer and restore a lustre to your hair  *I* find it even more funny how people jump in to save the day and honor of a brand X. So I salute  all brand loyalists for not letting things like recalls, lemons and facts tarnish their chosen brand  Beer

Buddy of mine has a Fit. I like the interior and the functionality. But I can't get past the looks of the car. It just looks goofy to me.

He likes his car but not long ago I told him of new re-designed Fit in works. He then told me that they must address the stability of car in re-design. He said that 120K on highway his Fit is a real handfull with any crosswinds. He said it is downright scary.

My buddy is a ruff and tumble hard core motorcycle guy. Not a guy that scares easy.

I would have agreed to you if you didn't write this.
Everyone knows Honda has the reputation as one of the most reliable brands, but that doesn't mean ONLY Honda vehicles can keep going on. There are a lot of domestic, European, and other Japanese vehicles that have lasted 300,000 km without a major trouble.

TORONTO - The proportion of passenger cars 11 to 15 years old still in use averages 60.6 per cent across the industry but varies widely among manufacturers. The latest numbers from 2006, according to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants with data from R.L. Polk Canada:

Porsche 98.7%
Volvo 87.2%
Lexus 83.8%
BMW 83.6%
Mercedes-Benz 82.6%
Jaguar 81.4%
Toyota 78.2%
Audi 76.5%
Honda 76.5%
Acura 75.9%
Cadillac 74.6%
Lincoln 72.8%
Saab 72.2%
Saturn 69.2%
Buick 68.8%
Chrysler 68.8%
Oldsmobile 67.2%
Infiniti 65.8%
Mazda 64.8%
Volkswagen 63.1%
Nissan 61.0%

Everyday on the road, I see a whole lot of vehicles from these brands that are at least 10 years old.
I know, this study does not tell us about reliability or mileage, but at least it gives you an idea..

At some risk of being labeled a fanboy, I think the Fit is remarkably stable in crosswinds at 120-130 ... but with some decently wide and sticky tires it would be a lot better.  That is, I don't think there is much wrong with the suspension layout or the aero but it is woefully undertired for high speeds. I wonder if your buddy's car needs an alignment.

A domestic that will go 300k? Which one? I have never seen on in 25+ years of being in the auto business. The Civic comes close to outselling the Colbat, Focus and G5 combined. There is a reason for this. Walk on the street here in Vancouver and look at the number of old Hondas vs old domestics. Then do the same thing at the scrap yard. But anyone who wants to go out and buy a GM product will soon learn that pieces of junk they are are how awful their dealer service is. I know this from experience because I stupidly bought a GM car in 2005 before the dollar soared. I can understand getting a lemon but I can't understand being treated like garbage by their dealers. My Cobalt was soooo bad they couldn't bolt the parts on it fast enough. It was in the shop three times the first week and there were plenty of other ones there, too. It was the first car I have ever had in my life that had to be towed back to the dealer not once, but five times! The rental car company knew me by name. Finally, I took a mega-bath when I unloaded it on the next victim, I mean, ahem, satisfied GM owner.

There is also a reason that there is more than one model of car; one does not suit everybody. The Fit is not for everybody. It is designed for urban environments. It is peppy and hard edged. It has a huge interior and is very fuel efficient. I have never noted any problems with cross winds but if I were used to driving a 5000 lb SUV, I might.

In CR's ratings, the Yaris is by far the most reliable small car, but the Fit is right behind and is tops in owner satisfaction (% of owners who would buy one again).

I have had a '87 GMC pick upwith over 300,000 km, 88 GMC van with over 260,000 with a bit of maintence they can last.
By the way the pick up had only one tune up done, 0il changes every 30,000 km, if it had A/C I would probably still have it

Your comments are illogic. If you tell me "there is a reason Civic comes close to outselling the Cobalt, Focus, and G5 combined", it makes me assume your logic is based on the number of cars sold, and makes me wonder why you say something about Toyota. What if I say "Yeah, Yaris and Corolla are plasticky and cheap looking, but there is a reason more-than-5-year-old Corolla still outsells 2006 redesigned Civic by a huge difference. And Yaris still outsells Fit".
Sorry if I sound rude in any ways, to be honest I like Honda better than Toyota. However, your comments sound too biased toward one brand. There are still plenty of domestics on the road that came out before 1995. If you regularly drive your car 20-30000 km per year, 300,000 is just 10-12 years. I don't know about your town since I'm not a resident of Vancouver, but my personal observation is also explained by the study.

Only Honda makes cars that you can depend on going 300,000 km plus.
Honda certainly makes cars that you can depend on going 300,000km plus. but it's not "ONLY" Honda. That was my point.

Here in the eastern rust belt older domestics far outnumber old Asian cars. Heck, I saw an '82 K-car just the other day. You never see '82 Hondas or Toyodas here because they have long since gone to the big tinworm in the sky. For that matter, so have most of the '92s. Meanwhile, domestics of that vintage soldier on and make up most of the taxi fleet around here.

I don't want this to get into a trolling match but here in Vancouver, our Aircare laws make it practically impossible to drive an '82 K Car.

Telling me how a 20 year old pick up can go 300,000 km is great. Try finding a domestic small car built in the last ten years that will go that far without major repairs and/or the interior ratting out.

But to each his own.

I just saw a K Car at Boundary & Lougheed Highway and there is another in the appartment parkade. But do keep trying - you'll get the other foot in there too.

Yeah lots of Crown Vics around they are probably not 92's however[Old cop cars] .They are big so it takes longer for them to rust. Haven't seen to many 82 chevettes or escorts roaming the roads lately. Roll Eyes Saw a 2000 focus the other  day with the rocker panels all rusted out. Yeah right. The 82 K car must have been rustproofed  annually or never driven. Try Krown it works.
