Who would buy a Yaris with that kind of price drop on the Corolla/Matrix?

Toyota building cars in Cambridge/Woodstock is paying off.

This is going to put huge pressure on the Civic, Rabbit and Mazda3.
The Civic has room to lower prices, since it's also built in Canada.
Unfortunately the Rabbit is from Germany, I doubt if it has any more room for reduction.
Where are Mazda3s built? Japan?

Mazda3 is built in Hiroshima, Japan their main plant. Mazda 6 is built in Michigan.

The base 2009 Matrix is incredible value now that it has proper safety equipment. Tempting.

Corolla and Matrix can be built and priced on Toyota.ca now.

No 2009 Vibe on GM's build and price yet.

Looks like my prediction of the Civic and Corolla leading the push on prices is now coming true.  Made in Canada.  ;D

I see the 1.8 L Matrix is not available with stability control or a fold flat passenger seat. Booo.

VW does a better job of making options available.

I noticed that the 2009 Corolla's gained 200lbs.  The US mileage is now rate at 27/35 vs 28/37 for the 2008 model.  I would be surprised if they still qualify for the $1000 ECO Rebate.  This would give a pricing advantage to the Civic after also taking into account the Civic's lower financing rates.

i read somewhere that the 2009 corolla / matrix were engineered to accept a hybrid powertrain sometime in the future.... the mileage for the 2.4l is pretty similar to the accord/camry, etc..  i wonder if this was intentional to "create" a noticeable mileage difference between the hybrid and regular version, should it come.

Toyota announces 2009 Corolla and Matrix pricing

Toronto, Ontario - Toyota Canada has announced pricing on the all-new 2009 Corolla and Matrix, as well as on the 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid, and on the redesigned 2008 Sequoia, all of which launched this month. The all-new, tenth-generation Corolla will have a starting price of $14,565.

The announcement comes on the heels of Toyota's adjustments to the MSRP of sixteen of its Toyota and Lexus nameplates.

The 2009 Corolla's base price of $14,565 is the lowest introductory price offered on the model since the 1997 model year; the Matrix will start at $15,705, which is $1,495 lower than a comparable base-model 2008 Matrix.

The 2009 Camry Hybrid starts at $23,400, while the Camry Hybrid starts at $30,600; both prices are lower than model-year 2008 versions. The Camry LE V6 receives new standard stability and traction control, while the SE V6 receives standard power sunroof and anti-theft system. New standard equipment on the Camry Hybrid includes a power sunroof, dual illuminated vanity mirrors and rear reading lamps.

The all-new 2008 Toyota Sequoia is priced at $44,675, the lowest starting price in Canada since 2001. The new model features a more powerful 5.7-litre engine that delivers 381 horsepower, increased towing capacity and improved fuel efficiency.

IIRC, I read not too long ago that there are 3 Canadian models cheaper (by few hundred dollars) than in the US; Corolla was one of them so I guess it's possible.

On the Matrix at least the base US models have A/C standard, Canadian models don't.
