Wiper Motor Slow -- Sometimes
« on: January 24, 2008, 12:10:10 am »
My wiper motor seems to have slowed down considerably, especially first thing in the morning.  As the day warms up, there seems to be less of a problem.

Is this a lube or motor brush problem that's easily fixed, or the sign of an impending replacement of the entire module?

I would think its has to do with the charging system in the car possibly. With the car warming up and the battery being recharged after being started for the 1st time in the morning it will draw a lot of power away from the rest of the systems. Heater or def,Radio, rear defroster and possibly your lights as well. AT least the DRL's will be on and all drawing power as well. This does leave a lot less for the wipers to use until some of  the draw is reduced. Usually the Battery is refilled again. If it works fine after a while then the motor for it should be fine as well as the alt as well. THats my thoughts on it as long as the system is working fine the rest of the time.   :)

Further to what Barrie said; either the battery or alternator is most likely under performing when it's pushed. It may be a sign of pending failure.  I doubt it's the wiper mechanism (motor).  Usually they just stop, DEAD.   :)

Brigitte I am not sure how old your car is but the average Alt does start to wear about the 5 year mark. I feel this is somewhat normal for many makes as well as yours.  :)

On my Hyundai Accent, I had a problem which started similar to this.

The bearing on the part where the wiper arm is attached had started to corode. It improoved a little after I sprayed it with wd40, but eventually it stopped moving and had to be replaced. Unfortunatly bearing only was not an option... :(

The car was only 3 and 1/2 years old at the time...

Do you park outside or inside?  Check your linkage.   Any sign of corrosion or water?
