The truck's styling reminds me of melding of a newish Tacoma and an early 80's Toyota pick up.  The cab section resembles a Tacoma Double Cab with a ridiculously tall-looking cab area.  And the bed is straight out of an old Toyota truck.

Well then, it must have been Toyota that copied that famous copyrighted Jeep look.

And the bed is straight out of an old Toyota truck.

That bed design (with the external tie downs) is pretty much standard in all brands of pickups outside North America. It's much more useful for tying down loads in a work truck.

From what I understand it was felt to be too 'utilitarian' for here, where only around 20% of trucks are pure commercial.

To me the grill and the overall shape of the cab as well tells me its somewhat copied from a Jeep. The actual size and configuration also says Jeep to some degree as well. This is just my personal view is all. Might be a allright truck for all I know. Only time will tell if the do well here and even are sold here also.  :)

As has been said, Mahindra used to make vehicles based on the Jeep. However, this vehicle has evolved quite a bit since the Jeep stage. You wouldn't want to compare the current Grand Cherokee with the Jeep, right? It's been in production in India for quite a while now and is reliable. I'm more concerned about the ride and NVH levels, which while acceptable, are not excellent.

The investor that is working with Mahindra to bring the Appalachian to the US said: "This is not Chinese junk"

From what I've heard and read, Indian "junk" is not all that great either.  ;D

Detroit automaker imports Indian pickup truck for U.S. testing
http://www.leftlanenews.com/detroit-automaker-imports-indian-pickup-truck-for-us-testing.html

If you've ever wondered what an Indian-built diesel pickup would look like on American highways, here's the answer to that (oil)-burning question. You wouldn't be the only one wondering, either. At least one domestic manufacturer wants to know how it drives too, so they bought this overseas version of Mahindra's upcoming U.S. pickup to try Michigan roadways.

Originally expected to be sold as the Appalachian in America, Mahindra's unnamed truck is expected to go on sale in the U.S. in the summer of 2009. A source at the company says they want to put the focus back on the Mahindra brand rather than a specific model, so an alphanumeric name is likely.

Mahindra's truck will be powered by the company's new mHawk 2.2-liter inline-four-cylinder diesel engine. The mHawk was designed in cooperation with diesel engineering firms Bosch and AVL with the American pickup market in mind.

Power ratings are expected to be in the range of 145-150 horsepower and approximately 300 pounds-feet of torque. The engine will be paired with a standard six-speed automatic transmission, a floor-mounted console shifter and steering-wheel-mounted paddles to manually shift the gearbox.

Mahindra promises the truck will be able to carry a sizeable 1.3-ton (2,600-pound) payload in its 7.5-foot cargo box. It will come with a 60,000-mile, four-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. The tall roll bar in back of the truck is for testing only. And we hear that the people at Mahindra were surprised to find this lone truck in Michigan. We can only guess which manufacturer purchased it

Exactly what I thought too....

Besides, Jeep tried to block HUMMER over the grill thing and were not successful...

Didn't that case fail mainly because Jeep and HUMMER have the same roots?  Don't think that could be said for this vehicle.

Didn't that case also concede that the Jeep grille was a Chrysler trademark, but the identity of that grille was not established early enough to make a case of infringement against HUMMER?

http://www.leftlanenews.com/mahindra-appalachian-2010.html

Mahindra is gearing up for a 2010 model year launch here in the States, but we caught this test vehicle undergoing cold-weather testing in northern Scandinavia. Sitting on Mahindra’s Scorpion platform, we’ll be seeing 2-door and 4-door trucks in both two-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive versions arriving on our shores in late 2009. And a Mahindra SUV will follow about a year later – likely for the 2011 model year.

Our lightly camouflaged pictures show a facelift for the Indian and European markets. The U.S. version will have a unique grille – different from what’s attempting to hide under the black vinyl in these photos. Power for the U.S. versions will come from a urea-based 140-hp common rail diesel, and all the vehicles will have a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Earlier reports have speculated the Appalachian name for the truck, but our sources are anticipating the model name will be made up of simply letters and numbers - alphanumeric names.

Mahindra had planned to build the Appalachian in Ohio from launch, but the initial batch of trucks will be imported from India fully assembled.

The Appalachian was expected to hit the market in late 2009, but the truck’s U.S. importer says the program is ahead of schedule and will bow this fall.

True.  Although these guys seem to have been using that grill for a lone time too, and has roots with Jeep:

I doubt they would not change or tweak it though before bringing it here.

Mahindra is delaying the launch.

http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009/05/mahindra-delays-us-pickup-truck-until-2010.html

Originally planned to be assembled in a plant in US, Mahindra now stating they will instead be importing finished trucks into the US.

But with "Chicken Tax" still in place, profitability of the truck is in question. (25% importation tax on foreign built trucks)
