Based on the one pic only, and the story, I think it makes sense within the Toyota lineup.

The HL has grown too large for my liking; the RAV is too small and I have had a bad experience with "too small" vehicles of this type, the 4Runner sells poorly now and is a real SUV good for off-road. This new CUV would be of interest to me, if I were replacing the HL.

BUT, based on what we have seen so far, far too early to tell.

EDIT - having now looked at all the pix on the Detroit Show site, I think it is in the vein of the new Infiniti EX and the new Murano somewhat. I think it's rather decent looking for this type of vehicle. I do think it will eat into RAV and new HL sales tho.

Looks like a response to Ford Taurus X - SUV like body on a slightly higher chassis.

Looks like the Edge grill and headlight design. I bet the Venza is priced higher than the Highlander.

I thought the Highlander was based on the Camry as well?

While I don't like the look of the front grille, I like the rest of the package, and I can appreciate the trend of bringing the Centre of Gravity of SUV's down to CUV level.  Highlanders don't traverse mountain passes, so I always felt the extra height hurt handling and made it more dangerous at speed.

This this is smaller from than any SUV from what I saw at the show, although a bit high it isn't much larger than a Camry.  It's basically a Camry wagon jacked.

While a HL is certainly no sports machine, we have put 40KMs on our '05 HL which included a number of trips over mountain passes (Coq/Rogers/Paulson/etc) and down long hi-speed stretches of the Coq and I5 in Washington state. Never felt it a poor handler nor dangerous at speed for the type of vehicle it is. What mountain passes in Ontario were you referring to?  Wink Wink Huh Smiley

I believe the old HL like mine is based on the Camry, don't think the new HL is.
