Nissan Rogue SL price difference (insane)!
« on: January 15, 2008, 10:57:50 am »
Hey Guys,

Can somebody please cares to explain to me what does justify the huge price difference between the U.S and Canadian pricing for the 08 Nissan Rogue SL AWD?

U.S Price: $22,615 ($22,992.67 CAD as per today's exchange rate)
CAD Price: $31,123.00 (before taxes)  :-X

The difference is $8130

Note: We are talking about the same car with exactly the same standard features with AWD being the only option chosen for both.

The only explaination that makes any sense is....GREED

$8100 is bad enough but when you do the math that's 35% more for the same vehicle in Canada :o

I thought only the higher end cars were a real ripoff!

As long as manufacturers can sell at those outrageous prices, they will continue!

Well if Nissan is consistent with toyota the differnce breaks down like this

 * Heavy-duty heaters, batteries, and alternators; $1000
    * High capacity window washer fluid reservoirs; $1000
    * More robust weather stripping and seals;        $1000
    * Added paint chip protection;                        $1000
    * Mudguards;                                              $1000
    * All-season tires;                                        $1000
    * An outside temperature gauge;                    $500
    * Heated mirrors                                          $500
    * KPH Stickers                                            $15
    * French English Stickers                              $15
    * Daytime Running Lights                              $100

So as you can see the price difference is easily explained.

That is really bad. I had understood the big problem for the manufacturers was to do with previous leases. Harley has no leasing problem, and so has cheerfully matched its prices with currency changes, year by year.

But this is a brand new model, a chance for Nissan to start with a clean slate, and they still go for 'Squeal Boy' pricing.

Interesting.....I didn't know that about Harley.

It's hard to believe that a motorcycle manufacturer's cost structure to distribute and provide parts and service support in Canada would be that much different from a company selling cars ???

100% with ya.  As we've covered in the Evo thread, there's no justification on new models...other than 2latecrew's explanation of course!   :thumbup:

With the old models...well...I can't control their decision to not "hurt" their lease positions...but they can't control me buying elsewhere!

I don't buy the lease arguement. Residual value is determined by market values at the time the car comes off of lease. With the number of used cars coming in from the US I really don't think manufacturers can prop up used values.

We are starting to be flooded with used cars from the US which I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. Who knows the real truth with them as they could have been under water at one time and they have no reason to tell you about it at all. Being from the US you may be luckey just to have any type of warranty on them to start with.  :)

If there was any doubt that they are trying to rip off Canadian consumers, here's Nissan's reply to my e-mail from last Fall. What a joke!  :P

From: Information Centre [mailto:information.centre@nissancanada.com]

Subject: FW: Rogue Canadian Pricing :-(

Dear Dave,

Pricing for Nissan and Infiniti products offered in Canada is based on Nissan Canada's assessment of the appropriate competitive value relationship that we need to achieve with our vehicles, in order to meet our business expectations in Canada.  This assessment is based on an evaluation of our volume expectations, the price and content differences with key competing vehicles and an understanding of prevailing in-market conditions.  Therefore, as the distributor of Nissan and Infiniti products in Canada, our prices are based solely on conditions that exist within the Canadian market.

We thank you for the opportunity to respond.

Yours truly,

Nissan Canada Inc.

To: President, Nissan Canada,

I am deeply discouraged by the price gouging automakers continue to practice in Canada vs the US, given the relative parity of the 2 currencies.

A $24,998 price (on the Nissan Canada website) for a base 08 Rogue is $5,750 over the equivalent vehicle in the US.  Introduction of a brand new vehicle into the marketplace presents a perfect opportunity to minimize this inequality.  It is extremely disappointing that Nissan Canada did not seize the opportunity to correct this imbalance with the introduction of the Rogue, but rather continue to take advantage of the wallets of Canadian consumers.

Once "1" desperate car company starts to match the US pricing to slowly obtain higher market share, the snow ball should start to grow.
I predict 1 of the big 3 USA car companies to start the roll.

I agree. They are only going to change in response to sales. I still don't understand the constant whining about this topic. Don't like Nissan's price policy? Then don't buy one (and don't buy a U.S. one either). Don't like any new car's price? Then buy a used one. Car buyers have any number of options. Who on Earth just can't live without buying a Nissan Rogue?  ::)

I agree, too. Currently, Nissan is simply just charging as much as the market can bear.

Not sure if their website reflects this "New Canadian Pricing" yet but I hope not! I built a diesel Jeep GC Limited on Friday and it was 40620 US vs 49822 CDN with the options I chose. ::)

I don't understand the whining about the complaining, myself.

The more complaints, the more publicity and the more discussion the better. As people get more aware the more they will hold off buying new/buy used/buy in the US/whatever. Hopefully it will get to where the average John Q. Public automatically checks US vs Can pricing before considering a new vehicle.

The more everyone does this the less the market will bear and the better prices are going to get.
