I would change oil & filter faithfully every 5000 or 6000 kms regardless of how long it takes you to get there. If you have warranty issues there is no way you can be denied if you show this was done.
...

How's that?

If the manufacturer states that the oil must be changed at a certain time and/or mileage interval, and you don't do it, then why wouldn't they have grounds to deny a warranty claim?

AFAIK, Honda specifies oil changes at 6 months or 6,000 kms, whichever comes first. If you choose to go 8 or 10 months between oil changes, then you haven't met the maintenance requirements to keep the warranty in good standing.

I would go by whatever the manual says...

I just had my second service at the dealership last weekend. When I went to get the car, there was a little window sticker which said 'next service in 8000 kms'. However, according to the Passat manual it says the 3rd scheduled service is after a 16,000 km interval (which I intend to stick to).

When I queried the sticker with the service advisor he said 'just to be on safe side'. Considering syntec oil changes are 100+ dollars a shot, I'll probably pass on that.

They did the same to me on the GTI but I skipped the 24K service and intended to bring it in for 32K (sold before then). Problem was they set the MFI to remind me at 24K  :bang: so I received and ignored the 'service now' message upon startup.

I personally wouldn't bring in the car before the manufacturer recommendation. Maybe shorten the oil changes a bit, but hell would have to freeze over before they saw me every 3 months.

Our FIT specifically says to obey the maintenance minder system... which will probably end up at 12 months for the first oil change

When I didnt drive much I would change oil minimum twice a year, usually in autumn - 5W30 for winter and then in spring 10w30 for summer season. The manual suggests 5W30, but I just know the 10 wont become as thin in hot summer, esp. when you overload an engine with AC while standing in traffic. The result? I got 272,000km and the engine still purrs.
Now I have to change oil more than 4 times a year and I go by 5k intervals.
By the way there is no such thing as 16k service for oil, that could be scheduled but not a regular service.
Today I put in a Napa filter which is supposed to be Wix, surprisingly it cost the same as Fram.

Slybry I can't see anybody roasting you for your maintenance schedule at all as it works and your vehicles are very well treated as well. Its obvious if they run well for you year after year. I think too many folks change the oil too early or too late which is not correct either but your way is correct in my mind. I also go by milage on all my vehicles.  :)

Of course  :-[ ... I wasn't thinking about newer models with the maintenance minders.

Either way, regardless of one's personal feelings on oil change intervals, I still say you'd be crazy not to follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule on any car that is still under warranty.

I agree.  Under warranty and for a bit afterwards.... if one needs an after warranty "goodwill" free fix then it does no harm to show that the mfrs schedule has been followed.
