Latest import numbers?
« on: January 05, 2008, 06:31:10 am »
Does anyone know what the number of cars imported from the US is for Nov or Dec? I'd be curious to know if the flow is still increasing or if the confusion over immobilizers  and the Canadian cash rebates are slowing people down (at least in terms of new cars)
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

I have seen 30,000 for November in a newspaper. No figure yet for December.

When I was in the mountains in November, the parking lot looked like a Subaru dealership.  All of the late model cars were purchased in the US.

At the gas station yesterday there was a woman with an 08 WRX.  I admired her car and she told me that she had just arrived from Montana that very day with it.  Looks like the changes to the RIV are already effecting sales here, with 08 models now admissable.
No place I'd rather be...

Going by this news http://www.canadiandriver.com/news_2008/01/04/080104-1.htm  almost everybody's sales are up (I dont see Subaru tho) which suggests the dealerships are doing fine even without us in there or the report is based on MTOs numbers of registered new vii-hick-else. I would assume 30.000 x 4 = 120.000 wheels a month should make a dent in sales.

I don't think RIV breaks out new from used in the monthly figures so there's really no way of knowing how many of that 30,000 number were new vehicles.

Nobody seems to realize that, by far, most imports are by dealers. From the dealers point of view they don't care if they lose a few low profit new car deals if they can replace them with a few high profit used car deals (even brand new imports count as used car deals for a Canadian dealer).

 :iagree:

The biggest GM dealer in town has had a giant sign up for the last couple of months in front of his used car lot saying " Why drive South? We have US pricing here!"

From today's Toronto Star:

Imports of autos from the U.S. shot up to another record last month as many Canadian used-vehicle dealers pursued more bargains south of the border to meet demand here. Purchases of new and used U.S. vehicles jumped 156 per cent, or more than 14, 000, to 23,070 in December from the same month in 2006, according to Canada's Registrar of Imported Vehicles. The December figures pushed Canadian imports from the United States to a record 189,738 cars and trucks for the year. That's almost 77,000 vehicles, or 68 per cent, more than 2006.

It's too bad RIV doesn't breakdown imports data by model year. While I suspect the majority of imports are used it would be interesting to know how many of those nearly 190,000 cars imported last year were new.
