The biggest threat to the CTS is not a BMW, but the Infiniti G35--which also offers more space than a 3-Series in an affordable package.  Between the two, the Infiniti will win with the hardcore sports enthusiasts, while the CTS will win with those who value comfort and great interiors in their sporty sedans.

 I Agree   Bingo!

Until Caddy can undo the terrible resale value of the previous base CTS and offer an entry model to compete with the 3-series, I cannot understand the argument the CTS is in the same league of the A6 or 5-Series.

Size is not everything... And the fact a CTS DI can barely outrun a 528 (on a straight line) is not helping.

Hardcore sports enthusiasts = young people

In my limited experience and observation, the Caddy name carries more weight with the over-50 generation.  I get the sense that Cadillac is trying to overcome that, but it may take some time.

Dat Escalade is real blingin', yo.

I would have a hard time deciding between a G37 and a CTS. The G might be more dynamically capable but half of the G35's I see (and 350Zs for that matter) have punkish looking alpha male types behind the wheel, wearing a beater, sunglasses, and some kind of hat. It's the "I've got 10 kids." look that puts me off.

Although the CTS is not what I'd buy if I was going to drop $35-$40k into a sport sedan, I really respect it for what it is.  I think it will do very well for Cadillac.

Stopped by a Caddy dealer today...these things look great!

However, you can get to $50 pretty quickly...and the ones on the lot were close to $60.

I worry about the depreciation...this would make a great car to buy if you can find one a year old or something...a year from now of course!

Sorry, the $35-40k was US dollars.  You can get a 3.6 with leather seating for $37,500, which is very competitive with other entry-level sport sedans like the 3-Series and C-Class, not to mention midsize luxury sedans.

Nice looking car.

However, I read an article somewhere with the CTS chief designer who admitted there was some kind of design fault with the CTS which cannot be fixed. I'll try and Google it and see if I can find it.

Yeah, Motor Trend blew that way out of proportion.  If a little noise and vibration from the engine is a "design flaw" instead of just the character of the vehicle, every G35 ever made is flawed.  It's not like the CTS's engine had snapping camshafts or anything.

You know, I read that about the CTS' DI engine, and expected some rough idling pig of a car. But the motor didn't vibrate any more at idle than any other car I've driven recently. In fact, it's smoother than Chrysler's new 4.0-litre V6, which vibrates noticeably at idle. The only clue that this wasn't a port injection motor was an audible ticking at idle that you could only hear from outside the car. I've noticed that in other DI-engine cars, too. I can't see it being a dealbreaker, though.

Only problem with that would be finding one in manual.  I imagine the vast majority will be auto.  Thumbs Down  OTOH, the depreciation on a MT CTS would probably be even steeper, so it might just be a steal in a couple years...

Leasing is the other option, especially if looking at a manual car.  All of the fun and none of the headache trying to sell the thing afterwards.  Smiley

In the States, interestingly enough, hip-hop culture, while born in the inner city, has really caught on in sanitized suburbia.  It's not unusual to have upper-middle-class kids drive themselves to their private high schools in Escalades while listening to rapper I-was-shot-nine-times-and-lived Fifty Cent.  I'm guessing, though, that this hasn't happened as much in Canada?

 we banned Suburbia in the 80's and ALL ourschool kids have to wear  this compulsory UNIFORM or be caned !!!!!

Hip-hop culture is live and well in all of suburban Canada. Same phenomenon as the US.

PLUS... with exorbitant prices in the core city areas, new emerging immigrant communities are being born outside the traditional areas. Todays 'immigrant' neighbourhoods are in suburbia.

Does anyone else think that Cadillac should sell a CTS coupe with the FE3 sport suspension as standard equipment?  I think it would help bring in more young buyers without requiring the R&D of an all-new model. 

In my unscientific observations, G35 coupes outnumber G35 sedans.
