Reversing
« on: December 14, 2007, 05:34:00 pm »
I find that it is a bit tricky to backup my WRX in reverse without either slipping the clutch the whole time, or going faster than I feel comfortable within the given area. I'm not sure if it is all WRX's or just mine. Since I've only ever driven manual cars, I didn't think that I had a problem with reversing normally but I always end up riding the clutch and getting that burnt clutch smell (I don't think that's good).

My older car was a CIVIC SIR, it had such a short clutch and a slow reverse speed so it made it easier.

Any one else had this issue on either there Subaru or any other vehicle.
In a world where the dead are returning to life, the word "trouble" loses much of its meaning.

Well when I reverse and the engine is cold it will idle at ~1500 so that adds to the issue as well, but I seem to have the issue with the engine warm or cold.

If the car goes too fast in reverse with the engine just idling, don't slip the clutch.
Just press the clutch and let the car coast when it slows down too much just release the clutch the get acceleration and press the clutch to keep coasting.
You may also just ride the brakes a little to slow the car to below idle speed in reverse specially when it's cold and it has a high idle.
Don't slip the clutch :nono:

Subaru is too nice a car IMO to drive it cold. There are many opinions about it but I havent seen an engine killed due to long warm ups. But I have seen many new cars smoking and rattling and they usually belong to start-and-go drivers.

As for the reverse as many cars as I drove it always feels too fast so I usually coast or park uphill and then roll back in neutral.
