Most Honda engines (in cars) use a timing belt.  Evidently that is changing.  On most inline engines, a chain is more reliable and durable, outlasting a belt by a factor of two or more.  On a Mercedes inline six or four gas or diesel engine, changing the chain before 250,000km is very rare unless the car has a poor oil change history.  On my C230,  rolling in a new chain and installing a new tensioner run about $400 at the dealer.  I seriously doubt a Honda dealer charges $169 for a timing belt install unless it foregoes other required parts.  Maybe an indie that is doing quickie jobs so that someone can sell their car with "timing belt done" in the ad.  Our old Mazda 626 2.2L had an incredibly easy belt to change and it still ran $220 or so when done right.

What drives the cams on a 1.8 HONDA?  A super light weight chain design.


So I guess all those garages around here with signs advertising "Hoonda Timing Belt Change - $169.00" are defrauding the hapless Honda owners?

I think most older honda's have belts. The newer 1.8 civic motor probably has the chain.I guess I'm one of those" hapless honda owners" the Fit has a belt i do believe . Not ready for a timing belt change just yet, maybe in 6 years.By the way what is a "Hoonda"?

Whatever you are running, belt or chain, if it is an interference motor it's worth keep an eye (or ear, in the case of tensioner issues) on it.

This is what happened to the camshaft when the timing chain on one of my motorcycles slipped. No doubt I had bent valves and dented pistons to go along with it. That was it for that bike.

Whether the Jetta’s TDI engine comes with a timing chain or belt, I think VW is on track to make some good sales figures with their new 2009 models.
I commend VW for putting the effort into getting their new Diesels to meet or exceed the new tougher emission standards, and then to offer them in vehicles other then a ¾ ton pickup.

To offer an improved Diesel engine, with a 6speed manual as standard, or an optional DSG transmission is fantastic marketing!   I know it’ll be a wait, but I’m excited to test drive the 2009 Tiguan with the new TDI and a 6 speed manual. I hope by then they’ll also offer the DSG option for the Tiguan.

Maybe, maybe not. People here tend to not realize that despite the worship of Honda in North America, in Japan they are not the #1 or even the #2 car company. They trail not only Toyota but also Suzuki in their home market.

That's exactly what it is. We have had a number of places pop up around here -- other places are similar, I'm sure -- that specialize in selling and repairing used Hondas to cater to the cult. It really is quite remarkable to look at the prices they ask (and presumably get) for really clapped-out, rusty examples.
