Winter tire recommendations for a 2004 Acura MDX?
« on: November 29, 2007, 02:57:00 pm »
Moving forward with my purchase of an 04 MDX.

What would be a good tire for this vehicle: driven in the Toronto area (usually) with regular weekend jaunts into the snow belt. Considerations are a quiet and comfortable ride, with tire wear an important (but secondary) consideration.

Thoughts?

Well look at websites like tiretrends and tirerack find out what's listed for your car and pick a short list.

There's are couple that stands out as being good winter tires. The Bridgestone Blizzak series is consider good although there are some reviews from Europe that says their very soft compound makes those tires dangerous to use in some extreme tests (like racing around a track). The Dunlop Winterspot 3D are also worth looking at and I would have gotten them if I could found an online store with a wheel for my car, the local place I went to didn't have that in stock. In the same speed rating with some good reviews are the Continental TS810. And of course you can't ever talk about Winter tires without talking about Nokian tires or Gislaved (what i ended up getting). Cause those two brands are from Sweden and Finland and some people say they know more about winter tires then anyone else.

Thanks gotak...I came across some winter tire ratings on the APA.ca website (http://www.apa.ca/template.asp?DocID=97), which led me to look at the Yokohama IT-S GE-072 Geolander. As alternatives, I am also considering Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 4x4 and Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow. These are all H rated (the Yoko is R, which seems unusual).

For Q tires, I would consider Bridgestone Blizzak DMZ3 and Michelin Latitude X-Ice.

I have asked my (U.S.) Acura dealer to price these out for me and then I will make a final decision. Based on a comparison between TireRack and TireTrends, there are some significant price differences.

If you are looking for longer wear in a snow tire...look at tires with a H or V-speed rating. At this late point in the season choice will boil down to wet is still available. There are a lot of options in the 235/65/17, but many are now sold out across the country.

Thanks for the reply...sorry I missed it until now. I ended up with Pirelli Scorpions (108H), as my other choices (Yoko IT-S and Latitude X-ice) were either unavailable or could not be delivered in time. I ended up having my dealer (U.S. purchased vehicle) source and install them for convenience; I'll check with you guys when it comes time to replace the all-season/three-seasons. Cheers.
